Gavin Newsom is expected to quickly sign the bill ahead of the March 31 state holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Calls have been mounting for officials in numerous states to cancel celebrations honoring Chavez and strip his name from schools, streets, parks and municipal buildings after <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us\/cesar-chavez-sexual-abuse-allegations-ufw.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the New York Times reported last week;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;the New York Times reported last week&quot;,&quot;yHasCommerce&quot;:false}\">the New York Times reported last week<\/a> that Chavez, who died in 1993, has been accused of sexual abuse by women, some of them in their early teens at the time. Dozens of schools, streets and municipal buildings across the United States, including many in the Southwest, bear his name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Arizona, where Chavez was born, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced last Wednesday that the state will not recognize Cesar Chavez Day this year, saying she was \u201cdeeply concerned by the troubling allegations.\u201d (Cesar Chavez Day isn\u2019t a formal state holiday in Arizona, but it is considered one in several cities there.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Texas Gov. And Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced the renaming of Cesar Chavez Day to Si Se Puede Day. Huerta coined the phrase, \u201cS\u00ed, se puede,\u201d loosely translated as \u201cYes, we can,\u201d as the union\u2019s rallying cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee also urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to rename the USNS Cesar Chavez, a Navy supply ship named after the labor leader. union\u2019s co-founders, Cesar Chavez, behaved in ways that are incompatible with our organization\u2019s values,\u201d <a class=\"link \"
