{"id":240713,"date":"2026-03-28T11:21:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T11:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/240713\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T11:21:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T11:21:13","slug":"san-diego-state-guard-miles-byrd-says-he-will-enter-the-transfer-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/240713\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego State guard Miles Byrd says he will enter the transfer portal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"4r\">The big shoe dropped for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/san-diego-state\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego State Aztecs<\/a>\u00a0basketball team on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"4u\">Guard Miles Byrd, the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and the last link to SDSU\u2019s 2023 Final Four team, announced that he will enter the transfer portal as a graduate student.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"4x\">The move has been anticipated since the Aztecs were left out of the NCAA Tournament field the day after they lost the MW tournament championship game to Utah State.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"50\">The portal opens on April 7, the morning after the national championship game. Junior guard BJ Davis announced earlier this week that he plans to enter the portal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What Miles Byrd said<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"56\">\u201cAfter four unforgettable years, I want to thank San Diego State for everything it\u2019s given me \u2014 on and off the court,\u201d Byrd said in a post on X. \u201cThe memories, the battles, the brotherhood, and the growth will always mean more than words can fully capture. Wearing that No. 21 jersey and representing not only the school but the whole city of San Diego has been a true blessing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"59\">\u201cWith that being said, I\u2019ve decided to enter the next chapter of my journey and will be entering the transfer portal as a graduate student. This wasn\u2019t an easy decision, but I\u2019m excited for what\u2019s ahead and the opportunity to keep chasing my goals. Thank you to my coaches, teammates, family and everyone who supported me along the way \u2013 this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5c\">San Diego State\u2019s basketball X account thanked Byrd \u201cfor an amazing four years.\u00a0Your impact on this program will last forever. A soon to be college graduate and forever an<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/AztecForLife?src=hashtag_click\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0#AztecForLife<\/a>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The big picture<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5i\">The Aztecs appear to be headed toward an offseason of upheaval after what was arguably the most disappointing season in school history. The Aztecs opened the season with big expectations of a deep March Madness run, based on Byrd and Magoon Gwath withdrawing from the NBA Draft, but then stumbled several times and ended up missing the NCAAs for the first time in six seasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5l\">Coach Brian Dutcher put it all in perspective during his wrap-up news conference last week when he said, &#8220;You have to understand this: Everybody\u2019s in the portal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5o\">Dutcher added that Byrd would have \u201cthe most interesting\u201d decision to make of all the Aztecs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5r\">Byrd will graduate in May and have one season of eligibility left.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5u\">\u201cFinancially, does he want to be a pro next year at another college? Is the money that drastically different? And yes, it is,\u201d Dutcher said. \u201cAt some of these places, the money&#8217;s drastically different. \u2026 So, I think he&#8217;ll have an interesting decision financially, whether it&#8217;s in another college or whether he thinks he has a chance to get into the NBA this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who is Miles Byrd?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"60\">Byrd came to SDSU from Stockton beginning with the 2022-23 season and appeared in four games before being redshirted.
