The museum had already been <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/11\/15\/san-francisco-contemporary-jewish-museum-closing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed since December 2024<\/a>, when it shut down and laid off 80% of its staff, citing low attendance and limited support since the Covid-19 pandemic. The CJM intends to use proceeds from the sale to \u201censure a sustainable and impactful future for the museum\u201d, according to a <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/pages\/658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">press release<\/a> announcing its intentions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cAs we enter our next chapter, every decision is guided by our commitment to remaining an essential part of the cultural fabric of the Bay Area for generations to come,\u201d Kerry King, the CJM\u2019s executive director, said in a statement. \u201cOver the past year, we\u2019ve strengthened the CJM both financially and structurally, positioning the institution for a bold and lasting future. While our physical home may evolve, our dedication to serving as an essential hub for art, culture and Jewish life remains unwavering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The museum, founded in 1984, is a non-collecting institution focused on contemporary Jewish art and culture. It inaugurated its 63,000-sq.-ft home in 2008, spending $47m to transform a landmark 1907 power substation. The project\u2019s award-winning architect supports the upcoming sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cIt has been both an honour and a profound responsibility to shape a building for this community\u2014one that transforms a historic power station into a new architectural expression of light, form and public life,\u201d Libeskind said in a statement. \u201cAs the Contemporary Jewish Museum enters its next chapter, it is my hope that the building continues to inspire all who encounter it, serving as a lasting testament to Jewish life in San Francisco and the creativity and cultural exchange it was conceived to foster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">According to Laura Waxmann and J.K. Dineen of the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/contemporary-jewish-museum-property-22085740.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>, local law requires that the landmark building continue to be used for cultural or institutional purposes. It cannot be converted into offices, housing or a hotel, greatly restricting the potential buyer in an already struggling downtown cultural landscape. \u201cThis is our most significant asset,\u201d King told the Chronicle. \u201cWe need to monetise it to have a future.\u201d The CJM currently has about $13.5m in debt\u2014the museum is still paying off the loan it used to construct the very building it is now attempting to sell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Although the CJM has not announced its exact intentions for the future\u2014perhaps it will follow the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco\u2019s lead and <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/01\/16\/san-francisco-institute-contemporary-art-nomadic-model\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">become a nomadic museum<\/a>\u2014it is decidedly not winding down programming. In fact, the museum intends to hire a new curator and collaborate on exhibitions and events with other cultural organisations. Its spaces will also be available to <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/rent_the_museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rent out for private events<\/a> through January 2027. The real-estate firm Newmark is <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nmrk.com\/insights\/press-releases\/newmark-selected-to-sell-736-mission-street-the-contemporary-jewish-museum-building-in-san-francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">handling<\/a> the marketing and sale of the property.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) has decided to sell its Daniel Libeskind-designed building in downtown San Francisco.
