{"id":241521,"date":"2026-03-29T01:17:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T01:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/241521\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T01:17:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T01:17:13","slug":"no-14-colorado-stomps-san-diego-state-to-take-big-12-conference-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/241521\/","title":{"rendered":"No. 14 Colorado Stomps San Diego State to Take Big 12 Conference Opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOULDER\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Led by the powerhouse senior\u00a0attacker\u00a0duo of teammates, and roommates, <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/lily-assini\/17999\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"17999\" target=\"_blank\">Lily Assini<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/maddie-shoup\/18019\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18019\" target=\"_blank\">Maddie Shoup<\/a>, the\u00a0No. 14\u00a0Colorado\u00a0Buffaloes dominated the\u00a0San Diego State\u00a0Aztecs,\u00a016-5,\u00a0in their\u00a0Big 12 Conference opener\u00a0at\u00a0Prentup\u00a0Field on Saturday, Mar.\u00a028.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Buffaloes (7-2)\u00a0continued their perfect\u00a0play\u00a0at home, improving to 5-0 in Boulder\u00a0while\u00a0also continuing their defensive mastery by holding\u00a0all\u00a0their opponents this season to single digits.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A good conference game and opener for us,&#8221; said Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/coaches\/ann-elliott-whidden\/4641\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"4641\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Elliott Whidden<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;I thought San Diego State came out and battled and\u00a0definitely went\u00a0hard on the offensive end and gave us a challenge there down on defense. I thought we made some good adjustments on the defensive end\u00a0the rest of the game as we\u00a0went and did\u00a0a good job\u00a0on offense.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it\u00a0was Assini and Shoup who led the way for Colorado by\u00a0combining for\u00a011 points and each eclipsing the 100-point mark for their careers.\u00a0\u00a0Assini, who came into the game with 97 points,\u00a0matched\u00a0a career-high\u00a0four\u00a0goals\u00a0and added two\u00a0assists to bring her career point total to 103. She is\u00a0tied with Marie Moore for 13th in the CU record book.\u00a0Shoup, entering the day at 96, chipped in three goals and two\u00a0assists to bring her career point total up to 101,\u00a0which is\u00a015th\u00a0highest in program history.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maddie is one of my best friends,&#8221; said Assini.\u00a0&#8220;She&#8217;s my roommate,\u00a0so it&#8217;s a special day for both of us and to be able to do it together has been amazing so I&#8217;m really lucky and grateful for that.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CU\u00a0dominated\u00a0with 40 shots to SDSU&#8217;s 19 while turning the Aztecs over 19 times as opposed to eight turnovers for the Buffs. Colorado also added eight\u00a0assists to San Diego State&#8217;s two in the convincing victory.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How\u00a0It\u00a0Happened\u00a0<br \/>\nColorado started the game strong with two goals in the span of a minute. <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/jaimey-hill\/18007\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18007\" target=\"_blank\">Jaimey Hill<\/a> opened the scoring at 13:07 with an\u00a0assist from Shoup before <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/rachel-kennedy\/18009\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18009\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Kennedy<\/a> added a goal at 12:10 to give the Buffs an early 2-0 lead.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Aztecs answered with\u00a0two quick goals of their own at 5:45 and 5:29 in the first quarter to tie the game before Kennedy put the Buffs back in front 3-2 thanks to an\u00a0assist from <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/rowan-edson\/18025\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18025\" target=\"_blank\">Rowan Edson<\/a> with 4:34 to go in the first. SDSU again tied the game with a goal at 2:45,\u00a0but <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/teagan-ryan\/18018\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18018\" target=\"_blank\">Teagan Ryan<\/a> scored with just 25 seconds to go in the period with an\u00a0assist from <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/molly-reed\/18016\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18016\" target=\"_blank\">Molly Reed<\/a> to put the Buffaloes ahead for good, 4-3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CU stretched its lead with four unanswered goals in the second period to take a commanding 8-3 advantage\u00a0at\u00a0the half. Shoup fed Edson for a goal within the first minute of the quarter to set the tone,\u00a0while Reed added a goal and Shoup scored twice, one on an\u00a0assist from Assini, to give the Buffs some breathing room at the break.\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second half belonged to Assini, who scored each of her four goals in\u00a0the third\u00a0and fourth quarters, starting by finding the net with 13:52 in the third.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>San Diego State again added a pair of goals to draw within 9-5 before Colorado put the game away with seven straight goals to close out the game, three coming from Assini,\u00a0and one apiece coming from Shoup, Kennedy,\u00a0Edson\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/cubuffs.com\/sports\/womens-lacrosse\/roster\/averi-gardner\/18005\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"18005\" target=\"_blank\">Averi Gardner<\/a>.
