A true performer throughout her life, she took her final bow leaving behind an enormous legacy.

A native San Diegan and a 1951 graduate of Hoover High School, Nancy Grace Prens was born on May 24, 1933 to Theodore Prens, a clothing merchant, and Toby Mann. Theodore and Toby developed the fashionably famous clothing store Farley’s in downtown San Diego. After Theodore’s passing in 1938, Toby later remarried Sol Bloom, also a clothing merchant, who adopted Nancy and her brother Arthur.

Nancy inherited her parents’ flair for salesmanship carrying that same gift of gab to the stage. Whether she was singing, dancing, or delivering a perfectly timed joke, she captivated audiences with her remarkable talent and larger-than-life personality. From a young age, Nancy would get down on one knee and belt out popular songs of the day with fearless enthusiasm. She could recite jokes from comedians like Milton Berle and later delighted in channeling the wit and style of Joan Rivers. Her sense of humor and love of performance followed her everywhere, even onto the road, where her license plate proudly read “MAHVLIZ”,” a nod to Billy Crystal’s famous expression “Mahvelous,” a word Nancy adored and used often to describe life’s joyful moments.

Never far from a stage, Nancy was known for her creativity and sense of fun. At weddings and bar mitzvahs, she would often perform a personalized song set to the tune of Shakes Hands with Your Uncle Max by Allan Sherman, cleverly weaving the name of every guest into the lyrics and leaving the room in laughter. Nancy also brought her humor to the stand-up-stage, performing at iconic venues like The Comedy Store and Igby’s Comedy Club in Los Angeles, as well as stages throughout San Diego. She later taught Comedy Traffic School, where her students often joked that her class was so funny the traffic ticket was almost worth it.

Nancy loved the big screen and had a lifelong love affair with Broadway. During one of her many buying trips to New York with her mother, Toby, she was introduced to Alan Geist, her beloved husband of 33 years. Alan and Nancy were married at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 1954 and later settled in San Diego, where they raised their three children surrounded by the same love of musical theatre and movies. Anyone who visited the Geist home on Redding Road knew it was always bustling with singing, tap dancing, and piano playing. Alan predeceased Nancy in 1987.

Nancy had an uncanny zest for life, diving into everything she did with extraordinary gusto and fearlessness, always injecting her own sense of humor. Her business ventures included a fun and fancy resale boutique in the College Area as well as a popular travel agency in Mission Valley, which led to many wonderful adventures as she and Alan traveled extensively throughout the world. She was also known for her entertaining one-of-a kind bus trips to see musical theatre in Los Angeles with Nancy’s Music Tours, as well as for leading the way with her famous shopping trips to Hong Kong.

Nancy was one of the original founders of Temple Emanu-El in the College Area. She remained proud of that connection throughout her life and was active in the Sisterhood, chairing their first fundraiser after the temple opened their doors in 1964. She also sang and danced in the Temple Follies.

Above all else, Nancy’s family was her greatest pride and joy and the legacy she leaves behind. She is survived by her three children, Ginger Giselle (Sol) Dunst, Mary (Jon) Epsten, and David Geist; her four grandchildren, Michael (Rebecca) Epsten, Steven (Tracy) Dunst, Alana (Jared) Ziman, and Andrew (Alyssa) Dunst; seven great-granchildren; and her four nephews, Jeff, Scott, Larry and Todd Bloom.

Services were held at Temple Emanu-El on November 5, 2025. Nancy Bloom Geist truly lived life to the fullest. May her memory forever be a blessing.

Nancy Geist OBITUARY Nancy Bloom Geist passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025.
