San Francisco police and California Highway Patrol officers thwarted a group of bicyclists who tried to take over the Bay Bridge on Saturday afternoon, confiscating 85 bicycles and issuing as many citations, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The CHP alerted the San Francisco Police Department\u00a0that the bicyclists were riding recklessly on city streets. The CHP said officers suspected the group was headed toward the bridge and planned to take it over.\u00a0<\/p>\n
SFPD then started to track the bicyclists, who rode directly at moving cars, swerved in and out of traffic and came dangerously close to pedestrians on city streets, the CHP said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The group eventually traveled onto the bridge by going the wrong way on the Harrison Street off-ramp, where they were met by a \u201clarge contingent\u201d of officers from both agencies, the CHP said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A total of 85 bicyclists were detained, cited for riding a bicycle onto a freeway, then released, with their bicycles confiscated, the CHP said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we saw yesterday was not harmless fun,\u201d CHP San Francisco Area Capt.
