Gavin Newsom following new accusations of impropriety by Chavez, The Sacramento Bee reported.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento County <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article315171356.html\">renamed the holiday<\/a> to Sacramento County Farmworkers Appreciation Day.<\/p>\n<p>An annual march in Chavez\u2019s honor has been canceled and the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article315204610.html\">city of Sacramento has covered a statue<\/a> of him at Cesar Chavez Plaza, which may be renamed.<\/p>\n<p>                                              <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774875970_989_SAC_002_262003_JV_Chavez_Statue.JPG\"   width=\"1140\" height=\"759\" title=\"SAC_002_262003_JV_Chavez_Statue.JPG\" alt=\"Black plastic covers the statue depicting Cesar Chavez in Cesar E. JOS\u00c9 LUIS VILLEGAS                                                                            jvillegas@sacbee.com                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Chavez, who died in 1993, was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/california\/article315100369.html\">an influential labor leader<\/a>, community organizer and civil rights leader who helped organize the United Farm Workers union.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reported March 18 that Chavez has been <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us\/cesar-chavez-sexual-abuse-allegations-ufw.html\">accused of sexually abusing<\/a> at least two teens. Fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta revealed that he raped her twice.<\/p>\n<p>The news prompted lawmakers to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article315197841.html#storylink=related_inline\">fast-track a name change<\/a> for the upcoming holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The day, which marks Chavez\u2019s birthday, was set as a holiday in California in 2000. Legislators said they plan to eventually sever the holiday\u2019s date from its connection to Chavez.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s closed in Sacramento for Farmworkers Day?<\/p>\n<p>All California state offices and state courts are closed for the holiday.<\/p>\n<p>State universities, colleges and community colleges will be closed, including UC Davis, Sacramento State, American River College, Sacramento City College, Folsom Lake College and Cosumnes River College.<\/p>\n<p>The San Juan Unified School District and Sacramento City Unified School District are already closed this week for spring break. Check with other school districts.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento County offices and libraries will be closed.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento city offices will be closed, although trash pickup services in the city will continue as normal. City offices in Elk Grove also will be closed.<\/p>\n<p>City offices in Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova will be open.
