Cal State San Marcos\u2019 baseball team is 20-7 after winning three of four at home from Stanislaus State over the weekend, while the Cougars\u2019 second-ranked softball team is 32-3 and riding an eight-game winning streak.<\/p>\n
Just down the road, Palomar College\u2019s baseball team is seventh in the California Community College Athletic Association rankings, riding a 14-game winning streak to a 24-3 overall record and a 13-0 start in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. And the Comets\u2019 softball team is 24-1 overall and 10-0 in conference play while riding a 12-game winning streak to a No. 2 ranking in the 3C2A.<\/p>\n
CSUSM\u2019s baseball team was led by California Collegiate Athletic Association player of the week Zech Samayoa against Stanislaus State. Samayoa went 8-for-12 in the Cougars\u2019 three wins with two home runs, eight RBIs and six runs scored.<\/p>\n
Jill Albayati, who is the CCAA softball player of the week for the third time, leads the Cougars\u2019 softball team with 11 home runs, 52 RBIs and a .576\/.639\/1.020\/1.659 slash line. The lead pitchers are Daleah Cardenas (12-0, 1.45 earned run average) and Jordan Hill (12-2, 1.55).<\/p>\n
Palomar\u2019s baseball team is led by Elijah Stephens (Sage Creek High School; .420 batting average with eight home runs and 37 RBIs), Michael Rodda (.368-4-27) and Braedon Peterson-Cheek (.364-1-19).<\/p>\n
Although Palomar\u2019s softball team is hitting .440 and averaging 10.6 runs a game, the most impressive single Comets\u2019 statistic is pitcher Kiara Flaviani\u2019s 21-1 record with a save. The La Costa Canyon High grad has a 1.76 ERA.<\/p>\n
UCSD\u2019s Mayes to portal<\/p>\n
Prized UCSD men\u2019s basketball player Hudson Mayes has entered the NCAA transfer portal.<\/p>\n
A guard, the 6-foot-5 Mayes led the Tritons with 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. He started UCSD\u2019s final 12 games, scoring in double figures 11 times and topping 20 three times, averaging 15 points and 6.9 rebounds a game as a starter.<\/p>\n
Baseball<\/p>\n
San Diego State (15-14) defeated UC Irvine, then won two of three games at Grand Canyon. Jake Jackson (Madison High) led the Aztecs, going 7-for-14 with two doubles and two home runs.<\/p>\n
\u2022 USD (7-19) has lost five of its last six games.<\/p>\n
\u2022 UCSD (12-13) swept a three-game series at UC Davis after losing two mid-week games at 20th-ranked Oregon.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Point Loma Nazarene (28-7, 24-4) lost three of four games to Concordia and had its PacWest Conference lead slip to 4\u00bd games.<\/p>\n
Softball<\/p>\n
San Diego State\u2019s Ava Schaffel was named the Mountain West conference pitcher of the week for allowing two runs on four hits in 9 2\/3 innings over two games, although the Aztecs (19-15, 4-5) lost two of three games at New Mexico.<\/p>\n
\u2022 USD (14-18) opened its West Coast Conference schedule by dropping two of three games at Oregon State.<\/p>\n
\u2022 UC San Diego (12-21) was swept at home by Long Beach State, extending the Tritons\u2019 losing streak to seven straight games. The Tritons are 2-20 over their last 22 games after a 10-1 start.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s tennis<\/p>\n
The 13th-ranked USD men\u2019s team has won six straight matches to improve to 14-4 on the season. The Toreros opened WCC play last week with two victories. Oliver Tarvet is ranked 45th in the nation in singles.<\/p>\n
\u2022 San Diego State (9-9) opened Mountain West play with three straight wins, including a 4-3 win at UNLV.<\/p>\n
\u2022 San Diego City College is 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s tennis<\/p>\n
San Diego State and USD are both ranked among the top 50 teams in the nation.<\/p>\n
The Aztecs (13-3) are ranked 42nd and went 2-0 last week against New Mexico and Air Force. No. 1 singles player Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley each won both their singles matches and went 2-0 in doubles. Jayna Clemens and Vesa Gjinaj also went 2-0 in singles.<\/p>\n
The 46th-ranked Toreros (9-7) capped the week with a 4-3 win over 54th-ranked Rice after winning three straight matches to open the WCC season. Hannah Read has a 10-5 singles record on the season.<\/p>\n
