(KBAK/KBFX) — RECORD HEAT COMES TO A CLOSE

March 2026 will end as the warmest March on record. March typically has an average high of 58.6. This year, our average is almost ten degrees higher at 67.6. Today we will fall back a good 15 degrees cooler from where we have been the last seven days; seasonal highs in the low 70s (Bakersfield). The Kern County mountain areas fall back to the upper 50s, compared to the 70s we had.

RAIN, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME!

If we go through the rest of the day without any measurable rainfall for Bakersfield, we will officially tie the March record from 1934 with ZERO rainfall. If we see a trace, that will be more than the record.

There is a chance we will see at least a trace, if not more, today. The subtropical jet stream has been pushed further south to be trained onto the state, allowing for a chance for moisture to push into our area. If rainfall hits for Kern County, we will see it as early as 12 p.m. This will be for the Kern mountain areas and desert locations. They have the best bet for rainfall today; 70%. The Kern River valley will come next (50%) and then Bakersfield and the South Valley (30%).

The southwesterly flow of the jet stream will bring more of a “rain shadow” scenario for the South Valley, blocking any hopes of significant rain for the area. That will not detour it from the Kern County mountain spots. I would expect a trace – .10″ across the South Valley, .10-.25″ Kern County mountain areas, .05-.15″ rain for the Kern County desert. Will it happen? Oh, the suspense!

SECONDARY SYSTEM SET FOR THURSDAY

Models suggest another storm front drops out of the northwest on Thursday. This is more focused on Northern California. However, we will clip the bottom end of the passing trough. It will bring pile-up clouds for the South Valley and allow for light precipitation for the Kern County mountain areas.

We will keep out a 20% chance for a light drizzle for the South Valley, but a 30-40% chance in our Kern County mountain and Kern River Valley areas.

This will keep our highs locked at seasonal levels into Good Friday. Friday, the system exits east and we will have partly cloudy skies. After that, the warm-up begins!

EASTER WEEKEND WARM UP

Stable and warm air return to the Desert Southwest Saturday. Temperatures will push another 10-15 above normal; mid to upper 80s. Kern County mountain areas in the 70s. The region will be sunny with no major changes in the near future. So… get ready for the same kind of weather we just left for most of March to return for the beginning of April.

For the latest weather from your Weather Authority team, click here.

Don’t forget to send in your photos or videos through Chime In when you see active weather in your area.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
