As many as six others are still visiting local waters, with one even dramatically colliding with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kron4.com\/news\/bay-area\/unbelievable-video-captures-windsurfer-crashing-into-whale-in-sf-bay\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">windsurfer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After gray whales appeared\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/gray-whale-sf-bay-21345537.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier than usual<\/a> in January, a vessel likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/gray-whale-death-22085909.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed an adult female<\/a> in mid-March, marking the first fatality of 2026. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/map-aims-to-save-whales-21073500.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sea creatures<\/a> are struggling to find <a href=\"https:\/\/oceantoday.noaa.gov\/whales101\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enough food<\/a> in the Arctic, where climate change is disrupting the ecosystem. Between 2019 and 2023, an unusual mortality event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/marine-life-distress\/2019-2023-eastern-north-pacific-gray-whale-ume-closed\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wiped out<\/a> a significant amount of the population.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the population of grays that completes the 10,000-mile migration along the West Coast fell to just shy of 13,000 whales, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/eastern-north-pacific-gray-whales-continue-decline-after-downturn-during-unusual\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lowest<\/a> number recorded since the 1970s. Out of the 26 whales that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calacademy.org\/press\/releases\/california-academy-of-sciences-confirms-24-dead-whales-in-the-san-francisco-bay-area\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died in local<\/a> waters last year, 21 were gray whales \u2014 the highest number of regional fatalities in 25 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Marine Mammal Center, California Academy of Sciences and their partners are hard at work studying why more gray whales are turning up in San Francisco Bay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were multiple cases this year already of gray whales actively foraging in San Francisco Bay,\u201d\u00a0Rulli said. \u201cAre we looking at the area as a pit stop?
