A San Jose man pleaded guilty to assaulting and robbing a U.S. mail carrier, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
Robert Cordova, 49, also known as Robert Cordona, was indicted in January 2025 by a federal grand jury of the robbery and assault charges, according to a press release from the Department of Justice Northern District of California.<\/p>\n
Cordova admitted that he entered a United States Postal Service truck with the aim of stealing mail, where he was then approached by a letter carrier, prosecutors said. He reportedly punched the mail carrier in face, knocked him to the ground, and struck him in the face and head repeatedly while on top of him.<\/p>\n
Cordova will next appear in court June 2 for his sentencing hearing, overseen by U.S. District Court Judge Beth Labson Freeman, prosecutors said. For the robbery charge, he faces up to 25 years in prison, and for charge of assaulting a federal employee, he faces up to 20 years in prison, prosecutors said. Each charge carries a fine of up to $250,000.<\/p>\n
The announcement of Cordova\u2019s guilty plea came from United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian and Stephen M. Sherwood, the inspector in charge for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service San Francisco Division.
