California on Tuesday observed its first-ever Farmworkers Day, a day that was previously known as Cesar Chavez Day but was recently renamed after sexual abuse allegations were made against the famed labor leader.<\/p>\n
The day traditionally features events statewide, largely focused on the fight for farmworker rights, but many organizations canceled those events this year while others chose to shift the focus.<\/p>\n
March 31 became a state holiday honoring the achievements of Chavez more than two decades ago.<\/p>\n
The holiday is shifting to celebrate the broader farmworker movement and the contributions of farmworkers to the labor movement after two women accused Chavez of sexually assaulting and abusing them when they were teenagers.<\/p>\n
The city of San Jose is working to remove Chavez\u2019s name from city landmarks, including plazas and streets.
