{"id":246788,"date":"2026-04-01T14:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T14:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/246788\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T14:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T14:56:09","slug":"there-are-countless-reasons-to-resist-returning-workers-to-the-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/246788\/","title":{"rendered":"There are countless reasons to resist returning workers to the office"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To the editor: I love Steve Lopez\u2019s columns, but I quibble with \u201cMr. Downtown\u201d and with the beloved Los Angeles Times journalist urging Mayor Karen Bass (and the rest of the government and the business sector at large) to bring people back to the office (<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-03-28\/dtla-is-hurting-but-mr-downtown-believes-it-will-rise-again\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAfter COVID, raids and other blows, DTLA is hurting. But \u2018Mr. Downtown\u2019 believes it will rise again,\u201d<\/a> March 28).<\/p>\n<p>Think: greenhouse gas emissions, traffic, loss of work-life balance, viruses swarming as people go to work sick, a colossal waste of time to commute. Nope! Staying at home for those who can is the optimal solution to a great many societal ills and the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Too many in government and business feel this pressure to return workers to the office and, to me, this is like choosing to step back into Los Angeles\u2019 smog-filled history.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants can open fewer days per week. Shuttered sites can be converted to housing.
