EAST LOS ANGELES \u2013 An allegedly suicidal suspect in East Los Angeles was killed in an exchange of gunfire during a standoff with Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department deputies Wednesday morning, a watch sergeant told City News Service.<\/p>\n
The department received the initial call and responded to S. Downey Road and Triggs Street at about 1:35 a.m.<\/p>\n
The suspect called the sheriff\u2019s East L.A. Station and said he was suicidal, according to the sergeant.<\/p>\n
The suspect emerged with a gun when they tried to make contact, compelling deputies to take cover, then he retreated back into the home.<\/p>\n
Believing the suspect was having a mental crisis, deputies called for a SWAT-type response from the sheriff\u2019s Special Enforcement Bureau and the Crisis Negotiations Team to facilitate a possible surrender.<\/p>\n
The suspect emerged a second time, this time shooting at deputies, who returned fire, the sergeant said.<\/p>\n
The man was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
No deputies or members of the public were injured.<\/p>\n
The victim\u2019s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.<\/p>\n
