Once that clicked, everything else followed. “Thankfully, we were all on the same page when it came to the band once we all stuck with a lineup,” says bassist Alvaro to No Echo.

Now featuring Georgie and Tony on guitar, Matthew on drums, James on vocals, and Alvaro, First Ordeal is moving forward with a clearer sense of identity, even if that identity wasn’t immediately obvious.

Early on, there was some internal debate about where the band actually fit. “There was debate on whether or not the band was metalcore or hardcore due to so many clashing factors in the writing process,” the bassist reveals. Over time, though, the direction settled naturally. “We came to an agreement that the band was more influenced and appealed to the hardcore scene.”

That balance still defines their sound. First Ordeal pulls from post-hardcore and early metalcore, citing bands like Anam Cara, A Well Thought Tragedy, and Naiad as key influences, while grounding everything in a framework that connects more directly with hardcore.

Their latest EP, Lost Fragments of Serenity, reflects that mix, both musically and in its construction. The release was handled entirely in-house, with recording, mixing, and mastering all done within the band. “Everything was done ourselves,” says Alvaro, a process that gave them full control over how the material came together.

Lyrically, the EP leans into heavier territory. Themes of self-exploration, grief, and personal growth run throughout, giving the songs a more introspective weight. “I would recommend listening to it when you’re going through a hard time,” Alvaro tells No Echo.

Operating out of the Bay Area, First Ordeal are part of a scene that continues to show up, regardless of circumstances. “The local scene is always going to be supportive, no matter what band plays,” he says, pointing to crowds that still engage even when rooms aren’t packed. “People still had the courage to show support or at least dance for the band, which I will always appreciate.”

Alvaro is also quick to point out the depth of talent around First Ordeal, citing bands like Order of Elimination, Deprave, Engraved, Xiomura, and Eviscerate, while acknowledging that there are far more worth mentioning across the region.

***

First Ordeal on social media: Instagram

Tagged: first ordeal

 About the Author

Carlos Ramirez

Owner of No Echo, Carlos Ramirez has played in the bands Black Army Jacket, Hope Collapse, and Deny the Cross.
