1.\u00a0State finds explosion that killed LA County deputies involved serious safety violations<\/a><\/p>\n

A state investigation has found that the deaths of three Los Angeles County sheriff\u2019s deputies in a grenade explosion at the parking lot of a training facility last year involved \u201cwillful\u201d and serious safety violations in the department, including failing to provide effective training and leaving explosives unattended.<\/p>\n

California\u2019s Occupational Safety and Health Division issued eight citations resulting in about $350,000 in fines in the report issued in January.<\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s department is appealing the citations.<\/p>\n

The explosion in July 2025 involved a grenade recovered the previous day from a Santa Monica apartment complex.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0World Cup schedule finalized; Bosnia, Turkey added to LA matches<\/a><\/p>\n

The full match schedule for the 2026 World Cup was finalized Wednesday following European play-off qualifiers, with Inglewood set to host eight matches \u2014 including games featuring the U.S. Men’s National Team \u2014 at SoFi Stadium.<\/p>\n

Five group-stage matches are set, beginning June 12 with the United States vs. Paraguay, with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey newly added to the opening-round lineup, followed by three knockout-stage matches.<\/p>\n

A marquee matchup is set for June 25, when the U.S. will face Turkey in a Group D contest at the Inglewood venue.<\/p>\n

SoFi Stadium, designated as “Los Angeles Stadium” for the tournament, will also host two Round of 32 matches and a quarterfinal scheduled for July 10.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Hot and dry March wipes out California’s snowpack<\/a><\/p>\n

It was a hot and dry March \u2014 leading to a sparse snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. California\u2019s snowpack now stands at just 18% of average for this date, according to the Department of Water Resources (DWR).<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s results are the second lowest April measurement on record for Phillips Station. The lowest April measurement was in 2015 when there was no snow.<\/p>\n

DWR and the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program continue additional surveys across the Sierra Nevada, but preliminary data shows this year\u2019s April 1 snowpack is the second lowest on record.<\/p>\n

According to DWR, the April measurement is a critical marker for water managers across the state because it is typically when the snowpack reaches its maximum volume and melts. The snowpack helps calculate how much snowmelt runoff will eventually make its way into California\u2019s rivers and reservoirs.<\/p>\n

Veteran housing project nears completion in West LA<\/a><\/p>\n

A new affordable housing project for veterans in West Los Angeles is nearing completion as city leaders highlight efforts to address veteran homelessness across the region.<\/p>\n

At the center of the story is one veteran who knows just how quickly life can unravel \u2014 and how critical access to housing can be.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my home for over a year,\u201d said Army veteran David Sinatra, pointing to his red pickup truck.<\/p>\n

Sinatra said he became homeless in 2022 after his father died. The two had shared a two-bedroom apartment in Pasadena, and after his father\u2019s passing, he could no longer afford the rent on his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t plan on being a homeless vet,\u201d Sinatra said. \u201cLife just has a way of throwing things at you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For more than a year, that truck became his shelter. He said he parked wherever he felt safe, sleeping in the truck bed or the passenger seat.<\/p>\n
