The residing departments, programs and classrooms are mainly relocating to two soon-to-be-completed buildings: the Undergraduate Academic Building and The Gateway building.

Beginning fall 2026, the ground floor, which currently houses general assignment classrooms, will be completely closed off with entrances to Evans only accessible on the first floor, according to Jasan Fujii, Evans Hall’s building coordinator and department facilities manager.

Fujii said the second floor was completely vacated over spring break. The past tenants — the Undergraduate Studies and College of Letters & Science Undergraduate Division offices — have already relocated to Level 5 of the Undergraduate Academic Building. The neighboring College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Advising offices have temporarily moved to Dwinelle 156.

The Mathematics Statistics Library, previously located on the first floor of Evans, moved out during summer 2025.

The Undergraduate Academic Building serves as the new center for Letters and Science Advising and will host more than 10% of campus’s general assignment classrooms moving out of Evans Hall, according to UC Berkeley Capital Strategies.

The statistics department, currently located on the third and fourth floors of Evans Hall, will move to the third floor of The Gateway. Construction is anticipated to finish in the current spring semester.

While earlier moving dates set for May have been pushed later in the summer, the relocation will still take place before the fall. The Gateway is set to serve as the home of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, giving it an official home after its establishment in 2023.

“I think it’s exciting,” said Distinguished Professor of Statistics Philip Stark. “You know the water cooler effect … you’re going to go get a drink of water and spontaneous conversations happen, and you learn things and you develop new collaborations. I think that being in the same space is going to be very exciting intellectually.”

The upper floors of Evans are home to the mathematics and economics departments, as well as a myriad of smaller, department-affiliated programs. These departments will remain in Evans for the foreseeable future, according to Fujii.

According to UC Berkeley spokesperson Kyle Gibson, campus administration is working on plans for new buildings for the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Economics. However, citing the need for several projects to house the capacity of Evans Hall during a move as well as funding barriers, these departments will relocate further into the future.

Under the 2022 Campus Master Plan, Evans Hall is to eventually be replaced with the Central Glade Overlook Building and Central Glade Overlook Landscape. The plans are purely conceptual, but the space would be smaller than Evans Hall and largely underground with a roof connecting to the Central Glade, according to Gibson.

Over the years, Evans Hall has received its fair share of criticism. Stark shared stories of concrete chunks falling off the building, which remains intact now after being covered in 2000 with the same green paint seen today. Barriers were constructed on the 10th floor to prevent anyone from jumping off and socks were shoved into windows to bar them from being opened wide enough to get out of, according to Stark.

“Some of (the people in the math and economics departments) are very sad to leave the building,” Gibson said. “Many of them do like their offices. There are lovely views from the top floors of Evans Hall looking out over the Golden Gate (Bridge). I would think that anyone would be sad to lose a view like that.

Gibson added that this move is ultimately for the safety of the departments in Evans by “wanting to have them in a building that is going to be able to remain operational after a large earthquake.”

Evans Hall has an SPR VI rating in accordance with the UC Seismic Policy rating system, indicating it is a high priority for improvement. Though the building is not seismically unsafe, if a large earthquake were to occur, the building could not safely be reopened, according to Gibson.

“Evans Hall has been our cornerstone for more than five decades, and while leaving it feels like the end of an era, it marks an exciting new chapter for CDSS,” said Tanisha Robinson, Front Office Manager of the Department of Statistics, in an email. “I truly believe that being housed together will allow us to build the kind of vibrant, interconnected community we’ve always envisioned for our staff, students, and faculty.”

[34
110988,47070,110991,110989,110990,110992,33366,47069,110987,110985,110986,86672,110983,110981,7905,110984,143,145,144,110979,110980,110982
0":"post-248753","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-oakland","8":"tag-2022-campus-master-plan","9":"tag-and-society","10":"tag-central-glade","11":"tag-central-glade-overlook-building","12":"tag-central-glade-overlook-landscape","13":"tag-college-of-computing","14":"tag-college-of-letters-and-science","15":"tag-data-science","16":"tag-department-of-economics","17":"tag-department-of-mathematics","18":"tag-department-of-statistics","19":"tag-evans-hall","20":"tag-gateway-building","21":"tag-jasan-fujii","22":"tag-kyle-gibson","23":"tag-mathematics-statistics-library","24":"tag-oakland","25":"tag-oakland-headlines","26":"tag-oakland-news","27":"tag-philip-stark","28":"tag-tanisha-robinson","29":"tag-undergraduate-academic-building
["GET
