A United States Marine<\/a> was detained at the Palm Springs, California, airport after attempting to travel with a live explosive in his checked bag.<\/p>\n

According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the incident occurred just after noon on Monday, March 30.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransportation Security Administration personnel discovered what was later confirmed to be a live 25mm explosive round during the airport screening process of checked baggage, prompting a coordinated response involving TSA, the Palm Springs Police Department, the Riverside County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, and military authorities,\u201d the department shared in a press release later that day on social media.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Marine reportedly told officers<\/a> that he had \u201cfound\u201d the explosive device a year ago and decided to keep it. He claimed he believed the explosive was \u201cnot live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palm Springs Police Department<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to extensive rust and corrosion, the round\u2019s original identifying paint markings were no longer visible, making it difficult to determine whether it was an inert training munition or a live explosive device,\u201d the department added. \u201cOut of an abundance of caution, the item was left undisturbed, and the Riverside County EOD Team was requested to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EOD team was able to confirm it was a live explosive round, and the item was safely removed from the airport.<\/p>\n

In their social media post, Palm Springs PD shared a video of the explosive being detonated<\/a> in a deserted area off Gene Autry Trail.<\/p>\n

The unnamed suspect has not formally been charged but could face punishment for violation of California Penal Code section 18710, as well as administrative action by the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n
