Diesel fuel prices<\/a> in California set all-time record highs this week as long-haul truckers and some businesses feel the crunch.<\/p>\n

The average price of a gallon of diesel Thursday in California was $7.559, an all-time high that eclipsed the previous mark Wednesday of $7.522. One week ago, the average for a gallon of diesel was $7.120.<\/p>\n

One month ago, it was at $5.100.<\/p>\n

In Los Angeles County, diesel was at an all-time high of $7.684 on Thursday, up from $7.646 Wednesday and $7.232 on week ago. One month ago, the average price for diesel was $5.110.<\/p>\n

The average in Riverside County was $7.66 and $7.57 in Ventura County.<\/p>\n

The average U.S. price for a gallon of diesel<\/a> to start the week was at $5.401, up by $1.809 from a year ago.<\/p>\n

Long-haul truckers are some of the first to take a hit when prices soar for the price of diesel, the fuel used for many freight and delivery trucks. At some point, soaring diesel prices could have a trickle-down effect, according to experts. <\/p>\n

“That’s about to really hit consumers in Southern California,” said UCLA Prof. Michael Ross, who studies the intersection between politics and fossil fuels. “Especially for things that are perishable.<\/p>\n

“Like fresh vegetables that come in from the Central Valley that have to be refrigerated the whole journey. Or, meat that needs to come in from other parts of California\u2026 It has to make a long journey. It has to be in a refrigerated truck. All of that takes diesel fuel.”<\/p>\n

Ross noted that some short-haul trucking, such as transports from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, are carried out by electric trucks.<\/p>\n

“It’s longer haul stuff where we’re going to see the biggest impact,” he said. <\/p>\n

Since the U.S. and Israel<\/a> launched a joint war against Iran on Feb. 28, the cost of crude oil \u2014 the main ingredient in gasoline \u2014 has spiked and swung rapidly. That\u2019s because the conflict has caused deep supply chain disruptions and cuts from major oil producers across the Middle East<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Oil prices surged<\/a> Thursday a day after President Trump delivered an address to nation about the Iran war. Trump said the war would end “shortly,” but also promised additional “extremely hard” strikes on Iran “over the next two to three weeks.”<\/p>\n
