Pedestrian struck in La Mesa last month dies from injuries, raising safety concerns <\/a><\/p>\n\u201cThese cases have profound impacts on workers and their families,\u201d District Attorney Summer Stephan said during a news conference.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, the defendants are also accused of exploiting workers\u2019 immigration status. In one case, prosecutors say a victim was promised help obtaining legal status in exchange for withheld wages, money that was never used for that purpose.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cruelty didn\u2019t stop at the clock,\u201d a Stephan said. \u201cThe defendant preyed on her dreams for a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n
The investigation began after one worker came forward to report the alleged abuse. That report led authorities to identify at least two additional victims, officials said.<\/p>\n
Rolando and Maria Corpus were arraigned in court and are now facing three counts of human trafficking and three counts of wage theft.<\/p>\n
If convicted, the couple could face up to 19 years and four months in prison, along with fines.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and additional victims may still come forward.<\/p>\n
