New wildfires<\/a> that started Friday in California<\/a> have rapidly spread and consumed nearly 2000 acres, prompting an order for emergency evacuations<\/a> from authorities.<\/p>\n

Authorities have issued immediate evacuation orders for the areas around both fires, which includes Acton and Moreno Valley.<\/p>\n

The memory of devastating and historically destructive wildfires in Los Angeles remains fresh in the city and state’s minds: The Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire, which started in January 2025, destroyed a combined 37,000 acres and over 16,000 structures, marking them as the second- and third-most destructive wildfires in the city’s history.<\/p>\n

The fires were largely believed to be the result of a confluence of combustible trends, with development pushing more housing into fire-prone wooded and grassland areas while power demand surged, and the electrical infrastructure in many areas is aging.<\/p>\n

This year has also seen one of the lowest snowpacks ever recorded<\/a>, raising concerns about water supplies, wildfire risk, and environmental strain ahead of the summer season: Measurements taken by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) on April 1, which is typically when California\u2019s snowpack reaches its annual peak, show levels at just 18 percent of average, making it the second-lowest on record.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Springs Fire started in Riverside County, California, which is the fourth-most populated county in the state with around 2.4 million residents. The county is also home to resort cities such as Palm Springs, Coachella, and La Quinta, and it contains most of Joshua Tree National Park. <\/p>\n

The Springs Fire broke out at around 11 a.m. local time near the Eden Hot Springs, and, as of 2 p.m. local time, CalFire reported that 1500 acres have burned as a result of the fire. Immediate evacuation orders have been issued for the area around the fire in the Moreno Valley.<\/p>\n

The Crown Fire, meanwhile, started at 12:26 p.m. local time and rapidly spread to burn around 280 acres by 2 p.m. local time across Los Angeles County. CalFire issued an evacuation notice warning of “immediate threat to life” in the area around Acton, which remains closed to the public at this time.<\/p>\n

The Crown Fire is around 5 percent contained, while the Springs Fire is not contained at all, according to the CalFire website. The cause of both fires remains under investigation at this time.<\/p>\n
