The Oakland Zoo continued to provide care Friday to a 3-week-old mountain lion cub that was rescued in Southern California, zoo officials said.<\/p>\n
The cub was initially cared for by staff at the Los Angeles Zoo after it was brought in by the National Park Service (NPS) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) on March 25.<\/p>\n
LA Zoo staff performed blood tests, radiographs and a CT scan on the mountain lion, finding that it was in overall good health besides missing its toes on one foot.<\/p>\n
The kitten, named Crimson, was transported by plane to Oakland, where zoo staff found it to be healthy after their initial examination.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe zoo is optimistic that Crimson will have a good life regardless of his history,\u201d officials said. \u201cAlthough his health appears good at this time, he is at a delicate stage, and the zoo will monitor him closely as he grows.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mountain lion cubs need 12-18 months with their mother to learn survival skills, according to zoo officials. Due to his age, Crimson can\u2019t be released back into the wild.<\/p>\n
Zoo staff hope to eventually introduce Crimson to a female club, Clover, that was also rescued in March. Mountain lion kittens typically thrive when they have a companion, zoo officials said.<\/p>\n
