Millennium, one of the Bay Area\u2019s pioneering vegan restaurants, is closing after more than three decades.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old restaurant\u2019s last day at 5912 College Ave. in Oakland will be May 16, co-owner Alison Bagby said in an Instagram video<\/a> posted Friday. \u201cWe\u2019ve had difficult times over the last year. It\u2019s clear to us right now that this isn\u2019t financially sustainable for us anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cWe just aren\u2019t busy enough to keep operating this way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m really just so grateful for all the support we\u2019ve received over nearly 32 years,\u201d Bagby said via text message.\u00a0<\/p>\n Original owners Larry and Ann Wheat opened Millennium in 1994 inside of San Francisco\u2019s Hotel California, where it made waves as a vegan fine-dining restaurant. Executive chef and co-owner Eric Tucker\u2019s eclectic menu went beyond salads and meat substitutes, including fried oyster mushrooms and tamales with cashew \u201ccheese\u201d filling.\u00a0<\/p>\n
