During the trip, she continued sending photos and updates to her mother, Erbena Costa, in Brazil.<\/p>\n Surveillance footage obtained by police showed the couple wheeling three suitcases into a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in El Segundo.<\/p>\n After visiting a bowling alley on Dec. 27, 2022, the couple had an argument before returning to the hotel. That was the last time Porsborg was seen alive.<\/p>\n Two days later, Gomes Akay was seen dragging a large suitcase that appeared to be overfilled from the hotel just after 6 a.m., prosecutors said. He had struggled to drag a blue suitcase with one hand while carrying a trash bag in the other, an El Segundo police detective testified. He said the suitcase appeared to be \u201cbulging.\u201d<\/p>\n When her mother suddenly stopped receiving communication from her daughter, she reported the case to Brazilian federal police, who contacted the FBI.<\/p>\n On New Year\u2019s Eve, Det. Jeremy Glunt of the El Segundo Police Department and a partner knocked on the couple\u2019s hotel room door where Gomes Akay was still staying.<\/p>\n He reportedly told police that he and Porsborg had argued in the car. When they returned to the hotel, he claimed she announced she was leaving and told him never to contact her again, the Times reported. He also claimed she left her engagement ring on the nightstand.<\/p>\n He claimed they had planned to go hiking in the Angeles National Forest the next day, so he began searching for her in that area.<\/p>\n He said he noted the hike in an itinerary, but Glunt claimed the document presented to him showed plans to travel to Napa Valley instead.<\/p>\n Glunt also said that he had spotted \u201csmall abrasions that appeared to be fresh in nature\u201d on Gomes Akay\u2019s hands and apparent \u201crug burns\u201d near his elbows. Following the questioning, Gomes Akay was arrested on suspicion of murder on Jan. 1, 2023.<\/p>\n During questioning by Det. Joseph Iberri of the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department, he reportedly denied killing Porsborg before later saying that during an argument, Porsborg had struck him twice in the face. He grabbed her wrists, pulled her to the ground and allegedly placed her in a chokehold, the Times reported.<\/a><\/p>\n Iberri said that during the altercation, when Porsborg \u201cceased to struggle, she was not just unconscious, she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n Gomes Akay said he left her body inside a suitcase until the morning of Dec. 29, when he drove into the mountains. While climbing an embankment, the bag slipped out of his hands and Porsborg\u2019s body fell out.<\/p>\n He then \u201cdecided to bury her under some rocks,\u201d Iberri testified. An exact location of the woman\u2019s body was never given, though using GPS data from his phone, investigators have identified a large area in the Angeles National Forest where her remains might have been buried. Times, Porsborg was married at the time, a fact that Gomes Akay was reportedly unaware of.
