{"id":251580,"date":"2026-04-04T12:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T12:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/251580\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T12:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T12:16:11","slug":"ucla-looks-to-beat-the-south-carolina-program-that-inspired-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/251580\/","title":{"rendered":"UCLA looks to beat the South Carolina program that inspired it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PHOENIX\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I must confess, I didn\u2019t believe them.<\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, I listened to then-freshman <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-20\/how-kiki-rice-became-ucla-bruins-top-wnba-draft-prospect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiki Rice<\/a> and coach <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-27\/ucla-cori-close-says-bruins-success-has-taken-toll\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cori Close<\/a> tell me that their UCLA women\u2019s basketball program would someday be like South Carolina\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t buy it, but I admired their aspirational attitude like I admired someone who dreamed of visiting the moon.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the Gamecocks were two-time national champions. Now, of course, coach <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-04-03\/geno-auriemma-dawn-staley-get-into-final-four-confrontation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dawn Staley<\/a>\u2019s teams have won three NCAA titles \u2014 with a shot at four, if she can get her team past Rice, Close and their Bruins in the NCAA women\u2019s basketball championship game on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA and South Carolina, the last teams standing in the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p>The best teams in the country.<\/p>\n<p>And besides that, with their hard-fought Final Four victories <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-04-03\/ucla-defeats-texas-in-final-four-south-carolina-title\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friday over Texas<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-04-03\/geno-auriemma-dawn-staley-get-into-final-four-confrontation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Connecticut<\/a>, respectively, barometers for other programs that dream of ascending to such elite heights.<\/p>\n<p>And wouldn\u2019t you know it? It\u2019s exactly as Close predicted in November 2022, when her Bruins were off to a 7-0 start with a nationally televised date against the Gamecocks up next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth programs obviously hold themselves to very high standards,\u201d Close said then. \u201cThey are a little bit ahead of us, in the fact that they\u2019ve won two national championships. But that\u2019s where we want to be. We want to be that level of a program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Close sounded like the precocious kid at the party who goes around telling the adults that she\u2019s going to be president someday \u2014 or in Rice\u2019s case, that her team would be one of the top in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"UCLA players celebrate after defeating Texas in the Final Four.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775304969_477_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>UCLA players celebrate after defeating Texas in the Final Four on Friday to advance to the NCAA women\u2019s basketball national championship game.<\/p>\n<p>(Ronaldo Bolanos\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know we have the talent, the skill and we have the ability to execute and play at the level of a top-five team,\u201d said the point guard who had just arrived in Westwood as the nation\u2019s No. 2 recruit, behind Lauren Betts \u2014 who\u2019d join her a season later.<\/p>\n<p>You know how we adults are inclined to respond to such unbridled optimism: With patronizing pats on the head. By lying encouragingly, \u201cSure, pal, you can do anything you want to!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How cute. <\/p>\n<p>Oh, but the Bruins were being serious.<\/p>\n<p>They meant it.<\/p>\n<p>Hold the follow-through: They did it.<\/p>\n<p>They talked their talk right into existence, respectfully, reverently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what we all came here to do,\u201d said <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-15\/how-gabriela-jaquez-became-breakout-shooting-star-for-no-2-ucla\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriela Jaquez<\/a> on Friday, a few minutes after the Bruins eked out an oppressive 51-44 victory over Texas to march into the NCAA championship game for the first time in program history.<\/p>\n<p>Rice and Jaquez were the only members of the current Bruins juggernaut who began their college careers as a freshman at UCLA in 2022, when they \u2014 then as the nation\u2019s No. 15 team \u2014 played the top-ranked Gamecocks respectably in Columbia, losing 74-64.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of full circle playing South Carolina in the national championship game,\u201d said Jaquez, who remembers that first meeting having to deal with Gamecocks star Aliyah Boston in front of a packed Colonial Life Arena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, crazy. And we played \u2018em again right in the Sweet 16.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>           <img id=\"yt-img-mixzjYK5BqE\" class=\"absolute\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775286012_111_hqdefault.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/>                 <\/p>\n<p>That season ended with another <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2023-03-25\/ucla-women-south-carolina-ncaa-tournament-march-madness-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">loss to South Carolina<\/a>, 59-43, in the Sweet 16.<\/p>\n<p>The following season, the Bruins <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2024-03-30\/ucla-women-falter-at-finish-ncaa-tournament-loss-to-lsu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost again in the Sweet 16<\/a>, this time in a 78-69 nailbiter against Louisiana State.<\/p>\n<p>And then, by the time UCLA and South Carolina completed their home-and-home set in 2024, UCLA was really starting to fulfill the prophecy it had laid out for itself.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2024-11-24\/ucla-womens-basketball-upsets-south-carolina-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bruins dismantled South Carolina<\/a> 77-62 in a November game at Pauley Pavilion, launching themselves on a path toward the program\u2019s first NCAA Final Four appearance last March, when their season ended with an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2025-04-04\/uclas-ncaa-tournament-run-ends-uconn-final-four\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">85-51 national semifinal loss to UConn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust stacking those days,\u201d Close said after <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-29\/ucla-women-defeat-duke-to-advance-to-ncaa-tournament-final-four\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UCLA beat Duke<\/a> in the Elite Eight last week. \u201cWhat did that experience teach us? What got exposed there? How do we adjust, whether it\u2019s roster construction, whether it\u2019s skill development, whether it\u2019s mentality, what point does every single thing teach us?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s staying the course on what you believe to be the values of what leads to winning. And I really emphasize what leads to it \u2026 winning is a byproduct. We\u2019ve just tried to keep a growth mindset of it all and try to let every situation teach us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>           <img id=\"yt-img-JoZeXM3gs2g\" class=\"absolute\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775304971_437_hqdefault.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/>                 <\/p>\n<p>So there will be no rematch with the Huskies \u2014 the Gamecocks <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-04-03\/geno-auriemma-dawn-staley-get-into-final-four-confrontation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beat them 62-48<\/a> on Friday \u2014 but there will be another opportunity to test themselves against South Carolina, model program, paragon of hoop and the only team standing between them and a national championship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Carolina has been, you know, one of the best programs in basketball for the past many years,\u201d Rice said Friday. \u201cA ton of respect to the program and the culture that Dawn has built over there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I honestly think that the biggest thing is just gonna be like, \u2018Look, this is the 2026 UCLA team. This is the 2026 South Carolina team.\u2019 So however we need to prepare for each other, however we need to match up, that\u2019s what it\u2019s going to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t doubt it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PHOENIX\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I must confess, I didn\u2019t believe them.
