California Gov. Gavin Newsom has joined the growing line of politicians taking a stand against alleged insider trading by government officials on prediction markets.<\/p>\n
Newsom on March 27 signed<\/a> an executive order barring gubernatorial appointees from making bets on prediction markets, such as Polymarket and Kalshi, using privileged information. He also used the order to swipe at President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n “Public service should not be a get-rich-quick scheme,” Newsom said in a statement<\/a>. “At a time when Trump’s Washington is riddled with ethical failures and insider profiteering, California is drawing a bright line: If you serve the public as a political appointee, you serve the public \u2014 period. Nikki Budzinski (D-IL) and Adrian Smith (D-NE) introduced<\/a> the Preventing Real-time Exploitation and Deceptive Insider Congressional Trading Act. In addition to elected officials, their staff and government employees, the bill would prohibit their spouses and dependent children from trading on privileged information in prediction markets.<\/p>\n Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) also last month introduced<\/a> the Prediction Markets Security and Integrity Act, which bars individuals with material nonpublic information from profiting from it in prediction markets.<\/p>\n The bill also prohibits prediction markets from listing events related to death and war.
