When students are deciding whether to attend college in California, the social and nightlife scene can be a deciding factor.<\/p>\n

Niche recently went in search of the top 10 party schools in California<\/a> in 2026 \u2014 and Cal Poly made the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cTop party colleges have a vibrant and diverse party scene,\u201d the school rating and review website said, offering \u201cfun options both on and off campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where Cal Poly<\/a> ranked on the list, and why:<\/p>\n

Cal Poly ranked No. 8 on Niche\u2019s list of the best party schools in California, earning an \u201cA\u201d grade for its party scene.<\/p>\n

The San Luis Obispo university has an overall \u201cA\u201d grade on Niche<\/a>, with high scores for academics, value and diversity.<\/p>\n

According to Reddit users, the local party scene<\/a> ranges from fraternity events and house parties to bars in downtown San Luis Obispo.<\/p>\n

However, most students balance social life with studying<\/a> and outdoor activities<\/a> such as hiking, biking and trips to the beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat really (is) the sustainable, long-lasting social scene at SLO,\u201d Reddit user Exbusterr wrote in a comment on a March 2025 post.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest social events for Cal Poly students is St. Fratty\u2019s Day<\/a>, celebrated the weekend before St. Patrick\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

Originally an unsanctioned block party<\/a> that drew thousands to residential streets near campus, resulting in multiple arrests<\/a> and even a collapsed roof<\/a>, St. Fratty\u2019s Day evolved with the creation of a school-sponsored music festival<\/a>, Morning on the Green, in 2025.<\/p>\n

The San Luis Obispo Police Department has also cracked down on street parties, arresting eight people and issuing 37 citations<\/a> related to partying this spring.<\/p>\n

What is Greek life like at Cal Poly?<\/p>\n

Cal Poly has a total of 18 fraternities and nine sororities.<\/p>\n

CalPolyChicks<\/a>, a Barstool Sports-<\/a>affiliated Instagram page, named Beta Theta Pi,<\/a> Zeta Beta Tau<\/a> and Theta Chi<\/a> among its favorite fraternities<\/a> of 2025.<\/p>\n

From upscale cocktail bars<\/a> and dive bars with pool tables to local breweries and wineries, Cal Poly students have plenty of options when it comes to drinks and entertainment.<\/p>\n

Bull\u2019s Tavern,<\/a> 1040 Chorro St., in downtown San Luis Obispo, is known for its Bull Sweat shot<\/a>, which owner Bill Hales called a \u201crite of passage\u201d for people celebrating 21st birthdays.<\/p>\n

Nearby is Frog and Peach Pub<\/a> at 728 Higuera St. The college bar<\/a> doubles as a live music venue, with bands typically playing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Library<\/a>, 721 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo, advertises itself as a \u201cclassic night club\/bar,\u201d Every Thursday through Saturday, the bar hosts DJs playing hip hop, house, Latin music and more.<\/p>\n

McCarthy\u2019s Irish Pub<\/a>, at the corner of Marsh and Nipomo streets, attracts a mix of regulars and weekend revelers.<\/p>\n

\"Cal Cal Poly\u2019s Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity lost its conditional use permit in March 2026 after receiving too many noise violations. Sadie Dittenber sdittenber@thetribunenews.com Are there a lot of noise complaints near Cal Poly?<\/p>\n

Over the years, Cal Poly students have repeatedly clashed with homeowners in some San Luis Obispo neighborhoods over noise and rowdy parties.<\/p>\n

Residents have complained about illegal fraternity activities<\/a> in the Alta Vista neighborhood and other areas, leading to a SLO Code Enforcement investigation in 2025, The Tribune previously reported.<\/p>\n

In May 2025, the San Luis Obispo Planning Department revoked conditional use permits<\/a> for two fraternities \u2014 Delta Chi and Sigma Nu \u2014 due to numerous unruly gatherings, according to Tribune archives.<\/p>\n

A month after, local fraternity Delta Upsilon had its permit revoked<\/a> over noise complaints.<\/p>\n

Two more Cal Poly fraternities, Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Epsilon Pi, lost their permits<\/a> in March following repeat noise and unruly gathering citations., The Tribune reported at the time. The fraternities also owed dues to the city.<\/p>\n

Cal Poly\u2019s annual security report<\/a> tracks crimes crime within the Clery Act<\/a> geography zone, which includes on-campus buildings and non-campus properties controlled by student organizations that are officially recognized by the university.<\/p>\n

Within those boundaries, there were four arrests for drug law violations in 2024, according to the most recent Cal Poly security report available. The university reported 13 such arrests in 2022 and six in 2023.<\/p>\n

The same zone saw one arrest for liquor law violations in 2024, compared to three the previous year, Cal Poly said.<\/p>\n

There were 13 referrals for disciplinary action related to drug law violations in 2024, and six disciplinary action referrals tied to liquor law violations.<\/p>\n
