For the 2026 Giants, it might be hard to top Friday’s game against the New York Mets, particularly the buzz that was (very) briefly felt by 38,000 fans in the sixth inning.

Tyler Mahle allowed six of the first seven hitters he faced to reach base and later gave up two homers. On the other side, Nolan McLean was perfect through five.

And yet, somehow, the Giants had Rafael Devers at the plate with one out in the sixth, with a chance to get them within two if he could come up with a hit.

Devers struck out. Luis Arraez followed with a groundout. When the Mets immediately scored three more runs in the seventh, those short-lived comeback hopes were dashed.

The Giants lost 10-3, and while there was a moment when they felt they could keep closer, this really could have been a much bigger blowout. The Mets had 15 hits, by far the most against this Giants pitching staff through the first eight games, and did all of that damage despite losing superstar Juan Soto to calf tightness after the top of the first.

Here are three things to know from a quiet night at the yard …

Mahle’s Mistakes

Mahle’s second start for the Giants nearly ended during a very long first inning that included four singles, two walks and three challenges. He needed 33 pitches to get through the frame, but allowed just two runs, mostly because he got a very well-timed bouncer back to the mound that turned into a double play with the bases loaded.

It was a grind all day for Mahle, who also gave up solo shots to Marcus Semien and Francisco Alvarez in the fourth inning. He made it through five but was charged with five earned on eight hits and two walks. Through two starts, Mahle has allowed 13 hits in nine innings.

Strange Sixth

McLean was at 67 pitches after throwing an unfair slider to Heliot Ramos to end the fifth, but he wouldn’t make it out of the sixth. Harrison Bader drew a leadoff walk that ended the perfect game bid and Patrick Bailey followed with his own. The 3-2 pitch to Bailey shaved the edge of the zone, but Alvarez didn’t challenge, and that proved costly.

Jerar Encarnacion flew out to right, but saw nine pitches. When Adames drove a double into the gap, the first four hitters in the inning had seen 26 pitches. McLean was lifted at 93 pitches on the night, and he could do nothing but watch as a passed ball brought a second run across.

The inning was a good example of how ABS will impact games in subtle ways. Had the Mets challenged, Bailey would have been the first out and the entire inning might have gone differently for McLean, who at one point looked like he would chase history.

Worth Keeping An Eye On

You could put together a top 10 starters list that includes Max Fried, Cam Schlittler and McLean and not look foolish. You wouldn’t have to stretch much further to get to Nick Pivetta. The Giants have faced some incredible pitching over their first eight games.

However … there’s only so much cap-tipping you can do. In those four games, the lineup has just five hits and one run in 22 innings. Those four aces (or close-to-aces) have combined for 24 strikeouts and allowed just one run to the Giants.

Schlittler and McLean, in particular, have shown ridiculous stuff. But at some point this lineup will have to gain at least a bit of traction against high-caliber pitching.

Download and follow the Giants Talk Podcast

BOX SCORE SAN FRANCISCO — There are nights over the course of 162 games when it’s hard to…

[30
31071,28349,43425,108309,101,103,102,104,106,105,54972,46986
0":"post-252323","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-francisco","8":"tag-alex-pavlovic","9":"tag-giants-analysis","10":"tag-giants-news","11":"tag-giants-observations","12":"tag-san-francisco","13":"tag-san-francisco-headlines","14":"tag-san-francisco-news","15":"tag-sf","16":"tag-sf-headlines","17":"tag-sf-news","18":"tag-tyler-mahle","19":"tag-willy-adames
["GET
