A man is dead after being shot by officers with the Los Angeles Police Department in Westmont early Friday, just half a mile away from another crime scene in the area that police believe are connected.<\/p>\n
Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at a gas station near the 11500 block of South Vermont Avenue around 1 a.m., according to the police department. When they arrived, they found a man believed to be in his 40s with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, LAPD said.<\/p>\n
Officers were not able to access surveillance camera footage. It was not clear what led up to the shooting.<\/p>\n
While searching for the suspect who was last seen going west on Imperial Highway, officers encountered an armed man walking on the sidewalk who police say matched the suspect description.<\/p>\n
LAPD said that despite giving the man multiple commands, he turned toward officers, prompting a police shooting.<\/p>\n
The man, later identified by police as Eliar Real Hernandez, was struck by gunfire and taken into custody, officials said. Officers rendered medical aid, but the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
Investigators say they recovered a loaded 9-millimeter ghost gun that was in Hernandez’s possession.<\/p>\n
Police previously said they believe the incident of the man involved in the shooting with officers was connected to the shooting of the man found at the gas station.<\/p>\n
No officers or other people were injured, police said.<\/p>\n
