It was overwhelming. It was powder-blue pummeling, eight-clap crushing, Westwood wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>It was the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-04-05\/ucla-south-carolina-ncaa-womens-national-championship-game\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UCLA women\u2019s basketball team<\/a> needing barely two hours to complete the struggles of 45 years, a stunningly swarming triumph unmatched in even the finest of Bruin athletic traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Break out a new banner. Make room in the Pauley rafters. A new collection of heroes is coming home, and they started the party early.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since 1978, and the first time in the NCAA era, the UCLA women are national basketball champions after a 79-51 finals blowout victory Sunday over favored powerhouse South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my gosh,\u201d said weeping star <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-26\/ucla-star-lauren-betts-rewards-fans-who-helped-change-her-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Betts<\/a> after the final buzzer. <\/p>\n<p>Oh my, Lauren. This was a heartfelt triumph for the towering tournament most outstanding player who overcame mental health issues to become the toughest figure on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do it for my teammates,\u201d she said during the celebration. \u201cI don\u2019t do it for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh my, Gabby. This was a legendary triumph for <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-15\/how-gabriela-jaquez-became-breakout-shooting-star-for-no-2-ucla\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriela Jaquez<\/a>, who scored 21 points with 10 rebounds in the final while her brother, former Bruins star <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2023-06-22\/ucla-nba-draft-jaime-jaquez-amari-bailey-jaylen-clark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaime Jaquez Jr.<\/a>, watched from the stands one day after he scored 32 points for the Miami Heat.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"UCLA forward Gabriela Jaquez hugs coach Cori Close during the second half of the Bruins' win.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775445377_151_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>UCLA forward Gabriela Jaquez hugs coach Cori Close during the second half of the Bruins\u2019 win over South Carolina in the NCAA women\u2019s national championship Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(Ronaldo Bola\u00f1os \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI imagined this moment, I imagined it so many times,\u201d she said. \u201cOh my gosh, I\u2019m so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh my, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-20\/how-kiki-rice-became-ucla-bruins-top-wnba-draft-prospect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiki Rice<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/newsletter\/2026-03-30\/how-angela-dugalic-helped-unlock-uclas-trip-to-final-four\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Dugalic<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-03-28\/how-charlisse-leger-walker-gianna-kneepkens-elevated-ucla\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gianna Kneepkens and Charlisse Leger-Walker<\/a>, this being a victory for the rarest of teams in college basketball \u2014 a group led by six seniors and graduate students who scored more than 90% of the points during the tournament and were openly fueled by a desire to play <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-04-03\/ucla-defeats-texas-in-final-four-south-carolina-title\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one more game together<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oh my, Cori, this being a legacy triumph for <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2025-01-05\/cori-close-connection-to-john-wooden-ucla\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coach Cori Close, a John Wooden disciple<\/a> who led through thoughtful motivation instead of mindless screaming. This was her 15th season as the Bruins\u2019 boss, which previously made her the longest tenured coach without a national title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s truly indescribable,\u201d she said from the celebration stage afterward. \u201cThe loyalty, the steadfast spirit, the character that they\u2019ve chosen day in and day out. &#8230; I am just so humbled that they\u2019ve chosen to commit to our mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Close\u2019s mantras is \u201cSometimes you, sometimes me, always us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Sunday\u2019s finale, it was always all of them, a scrambling, scrapping bunch that <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2026-04-05\/ucla-south-carolina-ncaa-womens-national-championship-game\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stunned the three-time champion Gamecocks into submission<\/a> in the third-biggest blowout in women\u2019s final history.<\/p>\n<p>This was UCLA\u2019s first finals appearance in the NCAA era, and they were trying to win their first title since <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2022-06-20\/title-ix-ann-meyers-drysdale-shares-how-law-shaped-her-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anne Meyers-Drysdale<\/a> led the Bruins to an AIAW championship in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Yet they never blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a business trip for us,\u201d said Dugalic. \u201cWe had the mentality that the job\u2019s not finished. Now the job is finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jaquez set the tone in the first quarter by following a Dugalic miss with a flying layup as she was sent sprawling to the floor. She was fouled, converted a three-point play, and the Bruins were quickly sending a message.<\/p>\n<p>They would not be intimidated. They would not be pushed around. At one point UCLA committed four consecutive turnovers and the Gamecocks closed the gap to 11, but then UCLA\u2019s defense got tough again and layups by Rice and Kneepkens helped them regain their advantage.<\/p>\n<p>At halftime UCLA led 36-23 and the game was essentially over.<\/p>\n<p>Jaquez put the bow on it when she hit a late three-pointer that made it 79-45, her shot followed by a smile and a scream to the heavens.<\/p>\n<p>           <img id=\"yt-img-egYRcKM0iNg\" class=\"absolute\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775429655_970_hqdefault.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/>               <\/p>\n<p class=\"video-enhancement-title\">Highlights from UCLA\u2019s win over South Carolina in the NCAA women\u2019s basketball national championship game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabs is incredible,\u201d said Leger-Walker. \u201cShe is that person that you never doubt is going to give her all. She impacts the game in so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leger-Walker ended the afternoon dancing with her teammates just as they have danced all season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still processing the fact that we are national champions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it.
