I worked smarter, I worked harder, we got a lot of breaks and I ended up winning pretty handsomely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019 campaign for governor in 1998 was the last time a gubernatorial contest in California was this wide open.<\/p>\n<p>While two heavy-weight candidates were duking it out against each other, Davis \u2014 an underdog that had been polling at the bottom \u2014 managed to sneak past them<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_California_gubernatorial_election\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:into a landslide victory;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> into a landslide victory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"California gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa REUTERS\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4aef8007b7df4e649de7d2e1dbc6f579.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>California gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Now, the numerous low-polling candidates in a crowded Democratic field are in a similar situation.<\/p>\n<p>While three Democrats are hovering near the top, the rest of the pack include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former state controller Betty Yee, state Superintendent of of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former Secretary of Health Xavier Becerra, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.<\/p>\n<p>So many contenders are splitting the Democratic vote that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/dems-panic-california-gov-race-003613098.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a number of polls have predicted the field\u2019s two Republican candidates;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> a number of polls have predicted the field\u2019s two Republican candidates<\/a>, Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, may get the top two highest number of votes in June.<\/p>\n<p>If so, under California\u2019s structure, that means only Hilton and Bianco will appear on the November ballot. \u201cThey have a valid reason to be freaked out,\u201d top polling expert Paul Mitchell said of the Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>With this possibility, Davis still said candidates need to trust their own gut on what to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fine for someone else to tell you you should get out, but that\u2019s not their business,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2026-03-25\/california-governors-race-last-wide-open-contest-1998-gray-davis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Davis told the Los Angeles Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Davis told the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the candidate, and if you think for whatever reason you want to stay in the race, you should stay in the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"California gubernatorial candidate Betty Yee AP\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3e0bee55685606b7ee3eaf908b9e1e04.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>California gubernatorial candidate Betty Yee AP<\/p>\n<p>By staying in the race, a candidate would be able to take advantage of potential developments and opportunities, he added. Anything can happen like in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>If people want to narrow the field, they should do it \u201corganically\u201d such as consolidating donors, Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor hasn\u2019t endorsed any candidate this year, but he said he\u2019s friends with two low-polling contenders \u2013 Yee and Villaraigosa.
