A caller at 6:45 p.m. told a dispatcher that there was a man on campus with a knife, chasing anyone who got near him, a news release from the police department read.”Yeah, he’s chasing people who get close to him,” the caller said, according to dispatch audio.The caller described the man to the dispatcher, and a helicopter with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spotted a person matching that description.Video from both the helicopter and from two Sacramento police officers shows the man pacing around before he approached the two officers. Audio from the helicopter stated that the helicopter had ordered Dearmond multiple times to drop the knife, which he had not.Bodycam from the officers shows that they had also ordered Dearmond multiple times to drop the knife. Dearmond could be seen approaching the officers. As he did so, the officers backed away from their patrol car, continuing to give commands to drop the knife while pointing their guns at him.One officer could be heard asking a third officer for a less lethal weapon and a stun gun. That same officer told Dearmond three more times to drop the knife before firing his pistol. Four gunshots could be heard.Dearmond is seen flailing around after being shot. He tried to get back up, but an officer told him to stay on the ground. Moments later, the officers work to detain him after confirming he no longer had a knife on him.Video shows the officers giving him medical aid. Dearmond had at least one gunshot wound to his stomach.After the shooting, the police department said it learned the person who called dispatch was Dearmond.
