AUGUSTA, Ga.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Tiger Woods<\/a> is everywhere and nowhere at Augusta National<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n

In the wake of last month\u2019s rollover car accident and DUI charge, the five-time Masters winner has stepped away from golf indefinitely and reportedly could be receiving treatment<\/a> in Switzerland for an addiction to painkillers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not immune to it just because he can hit a golf ball really well,\u201d fellow competitor Jason Day<\/a> said. \u201cHe\u2019s had 25 to 30-something surgeries, and when you\u2019re going through that many procedures, it\u2019s painful coming out of those procedures. I\u2019ve had procedures done and I typically try and stay away from all that stuff because I just know that \u2014 painkillers, there can potentially be a downfall to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris English, playing in his seventh Masters, said he took an interest in golf after watching Woods at Augusta in 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he\u2019s going to get through this,\u201d English said. \u201cHe has a big fight ahead of him. He\u2019s a fighter. That\u2019s what he does. He\u2019s going to get through it and come out a better man and a better person. We hope to see him soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

This marks the first time since 1994 that neither Woods nor Phil Mickelson<\/a> is playing in the Masters. Mickelson announced last week that he was pulling out of the tournament because of a \u201cpersonal health matter\u201d in his family.<\/p>\n

In one sense, it\u2019s the end of a storied era. But it might be more on the minds of the patrons than the other competitors in the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith great respect to those two players, I hadn\u2019t thought about it,\u201d said Justin Rose, who lost to Rory McIlroy<\/a> in a Masters playoff last year. \u201cYeah, they\u2019ve both been obviously titans of the game for the last three decades. Clearly in a tournament like this, if you\u2019re a past champion, you get an opportunity to come back \u2014 whether they\u2019re 1,000 in the world or 500 in the world or whatever current rankings may be, their stature is way more elevated than that in the game of golf and always will be.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s always a loss to not have either of them in a field anywhere. To your point, I hadn\u2019t noticed it yet. Therefore, we\u2019re all kind of in our own lane, so to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson said in the case of Woods, golf isn\u2019t \u2014 and shouldn\u2019t be \u2014 part of the discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI [couldn\u2019t] care less about Tiger\u2019s golf,\u201d Watson said. \u201cI\u2019ve always been in his ear. I told him that I wanted to be here for his next major. I was here in \u201919. We were in the champions locker and I made a lot of the champions come down to congratulate him. That was very emotional.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him from Day 1 that we started hanging out back in \u201806, \u201807, somewhere in there, that I\u2019m pulling for him as a human being \u2014 forget his golf.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woods, 50, was arrested March 27<\/a> on Jupiter Island, Fla., following a two-car rollover crash. Deputies said they found two hydrocodone pills in his pocket and noticed he was lethargic and sweating profusely. He recently underwent his seventh back surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look at that, I look at it and go, he\u2019s just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles,\u201d Day said. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate. The only thing that I don\u2019t understand is that it\u2019s a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm\u2019s way as well. But when you\u2019re the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and that\u2019s probably why he\u2019s probably driving a little under the influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Day said it\u2019s most important for Woods to know he has so many people pulling for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt must be tough to be isolated the way he is normally,\u201d he said. \u201cHe stays at home pretty much most of the time, doesn\u2019t really get out too much just because of how popular he is as a person. And then when you\u2019re at home, it\u2019s just difficult. Sometimes you don\u2019t have people around \u2014 loving people around enough \u2014 to be able to steer you in the direction that you need to.<\/p>\n

\u201cGolf misses him. We miss him here this week. It\u2019s always better when he\u2019s playing golf tournaments because we love having him around.
