Carol \u201cLiza\u201d Edison Harte, a devoted social worker and beloved friend to all who knew her, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 83.<\/p>\n

Born to Marjorie and Alvin Edison on July 17, 1942, in Manhattan, Carol graduated from Great Neck High School, where she developed a number of enduring, lifelong friendships, and later spent the greater part of her life in Berkeley \u2014 a place that suited her free and open spirit. She earned a master\u2019s degree in social work from the University of California, Berkeley, embarking on a career as the first social worker at Alta Bates Hospital. This profession reflected the very core of who she was: someone who showed up for others, especially for those who needed it most.<\/p>\n

Carol found joy in the natural world. Whether hiking mountain trails, swimming in lakes, taking long rides, or sitting by the ocean, she was most at peace in the presence of something greater than herself. Classical music was another of her great pleasures. Those who loved her will remember her as kind, caring, profoundly supportive, and with a great sense of humor. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and her warmth left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to be in her life. In her later years, she navigated the challenges of Parkinson\u2019s disease with a combative spirit and feisty courage.<\/p>\n

Carol is survived by her husband, Charles (Chip) Chipman; her children, Alexis Harte (Anna Bloxham Harte) and David Harte (Susannah Harte); her grandchildren, Mia Harte, Leo Harte, Daniel Harte, and Ethan Harte; her great-grandchild, Roman Harte, another light of her life; and her brother, Michael Edison (Ronnie Moskowitz).<\/p>\n

A green burial celebration of Carol\u2019s life and values was held at Fernwood Cemetery on March 9, not far from the Tennessee Valley trail which she and Chip loved to hike to the ocean on many occasions.<\/p>\n
