WASHINGTON \u2014 A General Atomics prototype built for the Air Force\u2019s budding Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA)<\/a> drone wingman program crashed in the California desert today after takeoff, the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Nobody was injured in the mishap, which occurred \u201cfollowing takeoff from a company-owned airport\u201d at approximately 1 pm Pacific time, the statement said<\/a>. Flight tests for General Atomics\u2019 YFQ-42A have now been halted \u201ctemporarily in an abundance of caution\u201d and will \u201cresume when deemed appropriate.\u201d\u00a0General Atomics owns and operates Gray Butte Airport near Palmdale, Calif. <\/p>\n

An Air Force spokesperson said in a statement to Breaking Defense that the service \u201cis aware of the incident and will follow standard aircraft mishap protocols.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The cause of the crash is unclear. \u201cAt this early stage, it would be premature to speculate on the circumstances,\u201d the company statement said. \u201cAs with any program, we follow a disciplined investigation process to understand exactly what occurred, and our focus right now is on gathering data and ensuring we learn from this event.\u201d<\/p>\n

General Atomics said in the statement today the drone that crashed is \u201cone of several production-representative\u201d YFQ-42A drones, which \u201cfly regularly\u201d for testing. The company has publicly revealed at least three copies of the YFQ-42A drone, dubbed Dark Merlin by the privately-held firm. <\/p>\n

\u201cSafety is our top priority, for our people and the public. In this case, established procedures and safeguards worked as intended, and there were no injuries,\u201d company spokesman C. Mark Brinkley said in the statement. \u201cWe\u2019re going to take a close look at what happened, gather all the data, and allow the investigation to guide us moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Air Force awarded<\/a> the firm a prototyping deal \u2014 alongside competitor Anduril \u2014 for the first round of its CCA program in 2024. Anduril\u2019s YFQ-44A drone recently began carrying inert weapons<\/a> in flight testing, but it\u2019s not clear whether the General Atomics drone has started similar flight events.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A production deal is expected to be awarded this summer, where Northrop Grumman\u2019s YFQ-48A has since emerged<\/a> as a dark horse contender.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second round of the CCA program is currently underway as well, where Breaking Defense previously reported<\/a> that nine firms have won early design deals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The YFQ-42A is part of what General Atomics describes as a \u201cfamily\u201d of unmanned wingman designs collectively dubbed Gambit.
