{"id":256848,"date":"2026-04-08T02:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T02:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/256848\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T02:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T02:49:18","slug":"new-la-play-tells-the-story-of-dolores-huertas-endurance-for-all-ages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/256848\/","title":{"rendered":"New LA play tells the story of Dolores Huerta\u2019s endurance for all ages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New LA play tells the story of Dolores Huerta\u2019s endurance for all ages<\/p>\n<p>The play debuted just as sexual abuse allegations about movement co-founder Cesar Chavez emerged.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-March, the cast and crew behind a new play about the life of labor leader Dolores Huerta and the rise of the farmworker movement were preparing for their debut.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on March 18 \u2014 the last day of the production\u2019s tech rehearsal \u2014 the New York Times published <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us\/cesar-chavez-sexual-abuse-allegations-ufw.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an investigation<\/a> into United Farm Workers co-founder Cesar Chavez detailing allegations that he sexually abused and raped girls and women. Huerta wrote <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@dolores_huerta\/march-18-2026-e74c20430555?postPublishedType=initial\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a statement<\/a> that Chavez had coerced her into sex on one occasion and forced her to have sex on another. She said she got pregnant each time and hid the pregnancies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing the news and reading it, I was in absolute tears,\u201d said director Sara Guerrero. \u201cI didn&#8217;t know what to expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wondered if the play, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centertheatregroup.org\/shows-tickets\/around-la\/202526\/s%C3%AD-se-puede\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede!<\/a>, would be pulled before it had a chance to begin.<\/p>\n<p>        Let us help you find the most interesting things to do<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for the Best Things To Do newsletter, our twice weekly roundup of L.A.&#8217;s most interesting events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would be the best way to continue to elevate this woman who endured a lot?\u201d Guerrero said.<\/p>\n<p>The answer Guerrero and the rest of the cast and crew landed on reflects a struggle for many since the allegations against Chavez were published. One wears a patterned dress and blue-rimmed glasses, the other wears a white shirt and black pants.\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775615365_236_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Director Sara Guerrero (left) and Playwright Eliana Pipes stand in front of the set for &#8220;\u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede!.&#8221; Both have longstanding ties to L.A.&#8217;s theatre community. <\/p>\n<p>Center Theatre Group commissioned an all-ages play about Huerta from writer Eliana Pipes in March 2025 to kickstart a pilot program that would bring shows to lesser-known regional venues.<\/p>\n<p>Pipes devoured documentaries, books and conducted her own interviews with people connected to the farmworker movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s this perception that farm work was only done by men,\u201d Pipes said. \u201cBut\u2026 there were women on the fields, there were women on the picket lines, and there were women in leadership in the United Farm Workers movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A necessary pivot<\/p>\n<p>On the day the New York Times&#8217; investigation published, Guerrero got together with Pipes and others from Center Theatre Group to discuss how to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aWhat really stood out to us was that we had always intended to elevate the story and call to action of Dolores Huerta,\u201d Guerrero said.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A woman with a medium-light skin tone and a scarf over her head holds a phone on the air, while holding a blue basket in her other hand.\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775615366_741_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The United Farm Workers&#8217; grape boycotts depicted in the play are credited with helping the union win contracts with growers and eliminate the use of certain pesticides. <\/p>\n<p>The decision: Chavez would remain a minor character \u2014 albeit with fewer lines. Pipes re-typed the play and drove to the final rehearsal at East Los Angeles College. She pulled over once to cry.<\/p>\n<p>The cast performed a dress rehearsal for an audience of ELAC students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were some tears, there was a lot of laughter and celebration, and I think it felt really healing for everybody to get to celebrate her, especially in this moment,\u201d Pipes said.<\/p>\n<p>El Teatro Campesino<\/p>\n<p>\u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede! also highlights farmworker leaders like Larry Itliong, who\u2019d <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2015\/09\/16\/440861458\/grapes-of-wrath-the-forgotten-filipinos-who-led-a-farmworker-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">organized Filipino farmworkers<\/a> for years before Huerta and Chavez started working with Mexican laborers. Filipino farmworkers, historically less visible, started <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/california\/la-me-0927-delano-strike-20150927-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the 1965 Delano Grape Strike<\/a> and Itliong later became a leader in United Farm Workers under Chavez.<\/p>\n<p>The language of the play \u2014 English, Spanish and Tagalog \u2014 and the production design reflect the culture of the farmworker movement, incorporating a style of skits performed for farmworkers from the backs of flatbed trucks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/elteatrocampesino.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">El Teatro Campesino<\/a> was not just entertainment, but it was also an organizing tool,\u201d Pipes said. \u201cThe actors that they put on were meant to educate farm workers on the fields about their rights and incentivize them to join the strike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A program that says &quot;Actos: El Teatro Campesino&quot; held in a pair of hands.\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" width=\"672\" height=\"480\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775615366_674_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> This El Teatro Campesino workbook belonged to Pipes\u2019 grandmother who met Huerta through United Farm Workers meetings hosted at Santa Monica\u2019s Unitarian Universalist Community Church. <\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A man in a navy blue suit appears to confront a man in a striped poncho. The politician character&#8217;s devil mask is also a nod to the archetypes often found in the style&#8217;s skits. <\/p>\n<p>Pipes was also tasked with translating the complexities of the farmworker movement into a narrative appropriate for all ages.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that meant taking a few creative liberties with the character\u2019s personal traits, like swapping Itliong\u2019s trademark cigar for a lollipop.<\/p>\n<p>More difficult was acknowledging the sometimes violent backlash the farmworkers faced. For example, a police attack on United Farm Worker demonstrators <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/entertainment\/article\/dolores-huerta-hurt-at-protest-sept-16-1988-4809592.php\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in San Francisco in 1988<\/a> left Huerta, then 58, with a ruptured spleen and fractured ribs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think sometimes TYA \u2014 theater for young audiences \u2014 and for families has a reputation for being sort of toothless or apolitical,\u201d Pipes said. \u201cThis piece does have something to say and it says it loud and proud. And even though it&#8217;s in an age appropriate way, we never shy away from acknowledging the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/19\/us\/dolores-huerta-cesar-chavez-united-farm-workers.html?smid=fb-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawQo-q9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeTKQySvqhMWC2ydJcIzfBqfhJrm7HZ0QDREfxpDA2JsOSyCepk5238FP0hXo_aem_z_3zc0V4BZ3ctFK2Dhj6QA\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">injustices that women face<\/a> in the movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede!&#8221; opens by asking the audience to think about the origin of their food before diving into the history of farm work in California. Juan De La Cruz plays several roles in the show, including a grape harvester. <\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;capitalist pig&#8221; is another archetype of El Teatro Campesino. Sol Joun plays the grower and several other roles in &#8220;\u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In one scene, a TV broadcaster interviews Huerta and Chavez \u200aat the terminus of the 1966 farmworker march from Delano to Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aI&#8217;m here at the State Capitol with Cesar Chavez and his secretary, Dolores Huerta \u2014 could you grab me a cup of coffee sweetheart?\u201d the broadcaster asks.<\/p>\n<p>When Huerta asserts herself as a co-founder of the union, the broadcaster calls her Chavez\u2019s \u201csidekick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s so hard not to be heard,\u201d Huerta\u2019s character reflects after the interview ends. \u201cEven in my own movement, some of the campesinos can&#8217;t stand listening to women \u200aand I try to pick my battles, but God, sometimes it feels like I&#8217;m battling a fight on two fronts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How audiences are reacting to the show<\/p>\n<p>Center Theatre Group retains the right to produce the play in the greater Los Angeles area, but the play is available for anyone to produce elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aI would love to see it across the country, and particularly in places that have a long history with the farm workers movement, like Arizona, Texas,\u201d Pipes said. \u201cBut I would love this play in every city, in every state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Two women with dark hair and medium skin tone sit together, eyes closed.\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775615366_24_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the show, the actors asked everyone in the audience to close their eyes and think about their personal answer to &#8220;What is the change you want to make in the world?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The show\u2019s initial 10-show run included libraries, recreation centers, schools and Boyle Heights City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The Toxqui family drove from Pomona and sat front and center for the April 2 show.<\/p>\n<p>Mom Noelle said her great-grandfather worked in the orange groves.<\/p>\n<p>\u200a\u201cIt&#8217;s something that&#8217;s important to me and my own family history,\u201d she said. \u201c[I have] the desire for my kids to understand the fights that have happened before them and that will continue to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A small girl with medium-light skin tone sits in the middle of a row of people clapping their hands.\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775615367_67_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Izel Toxqui (center), 8, \u200asaid she felt inspired after watching the show.  Her 4-year-old sister Ameli said she liked how Huerta helped people get food when they were hungry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEse parte me gusta que cuando ella estaba luchando por sus derechos,\u201d she added, saying she liked that Huerta fought for their rights.<\/p>\n<p>Ruffy Landayan came to support friends in the cast, but left with a deeper understanding of the farm worker movement he \u201cbarely\u201d learned about as a San Bernardino high school student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The play is] about history, but it also felt very current because it is really current,\u201d Landayan said. \u201cThat&#8217;s when I realized the power of theater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show also affirmed the experiences of people familiar with the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Raul Cardona has worked with El Teatro Campesino since the 2000s and is a community organizer in East L.A.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aThere&#8217;s a place for everyone in the revolution,\u201d Cardona said. \u201cIf you don&#8217;t belong to an organization, find one that you stand with and become part of it.
