As legend goes, Portuguese sailors brought those very hot chiles from West Africa back to their country, where chicken became the culinary canvas for this spice, with the addition of garlic, lemon juice and vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Peri Peri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2019\/07\/24\/fremont-lands-californias-first-port-of-peri-peri-spicy-chicken-restaurant\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opened its first local restaurant in 2019 in Fremont.<\/a> California is currently home to three of these eateries, including the one on Stevens Creek Boulevard and one in San Francisco. Most of the restaurants are located in the Midwest.<\/p>\n<p>In these kitchens, fresh, all-natural, antibiotic-free chicken is marinated for 24 hours, then grilled. The chile-spiked herb sauces are free of gluten, MSG and nuts. And all of the ingredients are certified halal.<\/p>\n<p>Customers can have their peri chicken many ways: the whole bird, pieces, tenders, or in wraps, sandwiches, pitas and salads. And you can control the level of heat, from \u201cmild and mellow\u201d to \u201cextra hot and spicy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peri peri goes vegetarian with a falafel pita and paneer and veggie patty wraps. Sides include regular and cassava fries and grilled corn.<\/p>\n<p>For dessert, there are pasteis de nata, the popular Portuguese egg custards.<\/p>\n<p>Details: The Port of Peri Peri is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and noon-9 p.m. Sundays at 3245 Stevens Creek Blvd., San Jose.
