{"id":258199,"date":"2026-04-08T21:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T21:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/258199\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T21:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T21:15:09","slug":"fresno-hearing-delayed-as-caleb-quicks-family-seeks-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/258199\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresno hearing delayed as Caleb Quick\u2019s family seeks justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The father of Caleb Quick expressed his frustrations with delays in the legal system as the 18-year-old Clovis teen\u2019s execution-style slaying approaches its anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Quick spoke to reporters Wednesday outside a Fresno courthouse, where  a hearing was again continued as the defense has struggled to get an expert to testify in the murder case <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article314851908.html\">against Byron Rangel<\/a>, who was 16 when he allegedly acted as  the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article314634494.html\">gunman in the April 23, 2025 slaying<\/a> of Quick.<\/p>\n<p>The elder Quick said prosecutors have told him the state has only a handful of experts who could testify in the transfer hearing, in which both sides present evidence and make arguments over whether Rangel should be <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article306945031.html\">tried as an adult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rangel and his alleged co-conspirator, Cassie Michael, are being tried separately, which means the expert for one case cannot testify for the other defense case. That further strains the small potential pool for defense experts.<\/p>\n<p>Michael is due back in court on Monday, and her transfer hearing could be set for later in the week.
