The city is also facing a $643 million budget deficit that could grow to $1 billion over the next five years, adding financial pressure to services aimed at addressing homelessness.<\/p>\n
Levine acknowledged the challenges ahead and emphasized the importance of funding stability.<\/p>\n
“To help more people move through the system towards stability and independence, financial sustainability will be a critical challenge in the years ahead,” Levine said. “I am committed to aggressively pursuing all federal and state funding streams, especially medical, to support local programs that deliver results for San Franciscans. We cannot leave money on the table in times like these.”<\/p>\n
In comments to the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>, the executive director of the city’s nonprofit Coalition on Homelessness said Levine’s public-sector experience was a positive factor, but she expressed concern that he lacks direct experience working with homeless service providers.<\/p>\n Levine said building local relationships will be a top priority once he begins the job.<\/p>\n “In my early months, you should expect to see me out in the community, meeting with providers, community members, frontline teams and, most importantly, HSHS clients,” he said. “Listening and learning and acting will be my top priority.”<\/p>\n
