Officers have issued multiple citations and impounded illegal bikes.&#8221;We see kids popping wheelies in front of vehicles. We&#8217;ve even had a kid ride his bicycle into a police car while the officer was sitting in it,&#8221; Hiott said.Just last month, a 14-year-old was taken to juvenile hall after speeding more than 50 mph on an electric dirt bike through a neighborhood in Rancho Cordova.The increased enforcement comes as departments across the region report a surge in electric two-wheeler incidents involving juveniles. Two years ago, Folsom police dash camera footage captured a pursuit involving a 14-year-old rider. In Citrus Heights, two children were struck while riding an e-bike.&#8221;The influx of everything that has been happening as far as collisions and the new laws that have come out, I&#8217;d say this is across the board for all departments,&#8221; Cristina Gonzalez with the Elk Grove Police Department told KCRA.Meanwhile, Elk Grove police are focusing on education to address the issue.&#8221;We showed up to schools every morning. We gave them pamphlets so that they knew, you know, with plenty of time what was legal, what&#8217;s not,&#8221; Gonzalez said.California law divides e-bikes into three classes. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are limited to speeds of 20 mph, while Class 3 e-bikes can reach up to 28 mph and require riders to be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet.
