BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 Drivers in Bakersfield could encounter a DUI and driver\u2019s license checkpoint Friday night as police step up enforcement aimed at reducing impaired driving crashes.<\/p>\n
The Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI\/driver\u2019s license checkpoint on Friday, April 10, 2026, at an undisclosed location within the city limits. The checkpoint is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.<\/p>\n
Officers will be watching for signs of alcohol and\/or drug impairment and will also check drivers for proper licensing. Police said motorists will be delayed only momentarily.<\/p>\n
When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate drivers suspected of drug-impaired driving, including impairment related to illegal narcotics, prescription drugs, marijuana and some over-the-counter medications.<\/p>\n
Police said DUI checkpoints are intended to deter impaired driving and reduce crashes. Research shows crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20% when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.<\/p>\n
Funding for the checkpoint is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.<\/p>\n
