Be sure to join Plover Fest<\/a>, the one-year anniversary celebration this weekend, April 12, 12-4 p.m.<\/p>\n

It cost a supervisor his job<\/a>. It\u2019s weathered a host of attacks, including vandalism<\/a>, disinformation<\/a>, and a failed attempt by a rookie supervisor to get it turned back into a car-way<\/a>. But despite everything, Sunset Dunes park, which will celebrate its one-year anniversary this coming weekend, is going strong. It even has its own beer, called \u201cFine and Sandy.\u201d<\/a> From Friends of Sunset Dunes, the advocacy group that made it all possible:<\/p>\n

Opening day drew 13,000 visitors, and from then on, it\u2019s become one of San Francisco\u2019s most visited parks. Families, seniors, runners, cyclists, skaters, and visitors from across the city and beyond showed up in numbers that exceeded expectations, redefining how our coast is used.<\/p>\n

Advocates provided the following data:<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Over\u00a01.7 million<\/a>\u00a0people visited Sunset Dunes in its first year, with nearly 40,000 people per week<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Local businesses saw revenue\u00a0increases up to 44%<\/a>, signaling a major boost for the Outer Sunset<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Car crashes in the Sunset have\u00a0declined<\/a>\u00a0since the park\u2019s opening<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0More than 75 community events and thousands of volunteer hours helped activate and maintain the park<\/p>\n

Visitation and use:<\/p>\n

Sunset Dunes quickly became one of the most heavily used and beloved public spaces in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Over\u00a01.7 million<\/a>\u00a0people have visited the park<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0On average, over\u00a039,800<\/a>\u00a0people visit the park each week<\/p>\n

Economic impact and tourism:<\/p>\n

Local businesses have experienced increased foot traffic and customer activity associated with Sunset Dunes.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Outer Sunset business like Andytown, Other Avenues Co-op, LoveFest Fibers, and Black Bird Bookstore and Cafe saw\u00a0revenue increases up to 44%<\/a>\u00a0after Sunset Dunes opened<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sunset Dunes has been featured by the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0Bloomberg<\/a>, the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>\u00a0as a top travel destination<\/p>\n

Traffic and street safety<\/p>\n

Traffic impacts have remained limited and in line with expectations.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Data from\u00a0SFMTA<\/a>,\u00a0the Frisc<\/a>, and the\u00a0San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>\u00a0found minimal changes in commute speeds, not more than 1-1.5mph at rush hour on most streets\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Traffic increases on nearby residential streets limited to approximately 1-2 additional cars per minute<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Some routes have experienced decreases in traffic<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Car crashes in the Sunset have\u00a0declined<\/a>\u00a0since the park\u2019s opening<\/p>\n

Park amenities and art<\/p>\n

With limited public expenditures, Friends of Sunset Dunes and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department introduced a range of amenities and art.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Added natural log seating\u2014recycled from storm-damaged trees in Golden Gate Park\u2014giving seniors and families a place to rest and soak in the ocean view\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Opened the West Side\u2019s only skate and bike park, featuring the most beginner-friendly skate infrastructure in the city<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sunset Dunes is now home to 4 sculptures, 11 murals, and a rotating outdoor art gallery featuring local artists. Installations include the highly popular Octavius the Octopus and Rockspinner installations<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A fitness area and nature play facilities offer workouts and kids play space with the best views in the city<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In partnership with Sunset business owners, each intersection now has wayfinding signage pointing to nearby small businesses<\/p>\n

Events and activations:<\/p>\n

Sunset Dunes has quickly established itself as a vibrant hub for community life.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Opening Day celebration drew 13,000 people<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sunset Dunes hosted over 75 community events in its first year<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a010,000 people trick-or-treat on The Great Hauntway, our Annual Halloween event.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Each season brought popular events like the Doggone Bike Ride, Jingle on the Way, No Kings March, and the \u201cDrag Me to Beach\u201d drag show and fundraiser<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Regular fitness activities include chair yoga, zumba and cantonese language dance class for our chinese seniors.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Local nonprofits like Support for Families use Sunset Dunes for events and community resource fairs<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Monthly cleanups bring neighbors together to keep our park beautiful<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Community volunteers contributed thousands of hours of volunteer time to steward and improve the park, including clearing sand, cleaning up litter, and organizing free community events<\/p>\n

Environmental impact<\/p>\n

Sunset Dunes\u2019s opening represents a positive shift in how our coastline is stewarded.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hundreds of volunteers have participated in dune grass planting and revegetation efforts, planting more than 2,400 native dune grasses<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a087 unique bird species have been documented at the park, including increased sightings of the White-crowned Sparrow, which nests at Sunset Dunes<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A new sand-clearing volunteer program (\u201cSand Bustas\u201d) cleared 2,867 cubic feet of sand to increase accessibility\u2013\u2013the equivalent to 667 recology toter bins<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Volunteers have hosted climate education events including: birding tours, responsible dog ownership information sessions, and walking tours<\/p>\n

Advocates aren\u2019t done. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is only the start of its transformation to a world-class coastal park,\u201d wrote the organization. \u201cWe plan to continue that process in our second year, delivering the community\u2019s most-requested improvements, bringing new amenities and life to the park, and inviting the whole city to join in to plan their future park together.\u201d<\/p>\n
