Disbarred attorney Michael Avenatti, who rose to prominence representing adult-film actress Stormy Daniels in her litigation against President Donald Trump, has been transferred to a halfway house in the Long Beach area.<\/p>\n
Avenatti, who had been serving a sentence of more than 11 years in federal prison at Terminal Island, was transferred from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles to a halfway house managed by the Residential Reentry Management office in Long Beach, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records.<\/p>\n
Avenatti was re-sentenced last June to 11 years and three months in prison<\/a>, which was down from his original sentence of 14 years for his admission to tax and wire fraud. Avenatti had managed to get his original sentence overturned on an appeal based on an error U.S. District Judge James Selna made when accounting for the value of Avenatti\u2019s legal services to his victims and a finding he had engaged in obstruction of justice based on perjury.<\/p>\n Last year, he had credit for about 40 months already served in the Daniels case, and had another 95 months in federal prison, or just under eight years left to serve.<\/p>\n Avenatti\u2019s attorneys last year argued in court papers that he was a model inmate while in custody. He was selected as a suicide watch companion for fellow inmates and completed hundreds of hours of classes, including a drug abuse program while regularly attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and religious services. He has also served as a GED tutor for fellow inmates.<\/p>\n Avenatti had made an open plea to tax and wire fraud, meaning he had no guarantee what his sentence would be, in June 2022.
