Appearing on Sactown Sports\u2019 The Drive Guys<\/a>, Slater made it clear that the NBA\u2019s investigation into the Kings stemmed more from public pressure than actual intent to lose games.<\/p>\n

As first reported by Slater earlier this week<\/a>, the NBA was reviewing a late-game situation from Tuesday in Golden State that saw Sacramento commit an intentional foul while in the bonus in a close game with three minutes remaining.<\/p>\n

Per Slater, team sources insisted the decision to foul Warriors guard Seth Curry\u00a0late in the fourth quarter was simply a coaching error by\u00a0Doug Christie\u2014not an intentional tanking move.<\/p>\n

The controversy was amplified postgame when\u00a0Draymond Green\u00a0publicly questioned Sacramento\u2019s intent<\/a>, suggesting the Kings were engaging in tanking behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, probably none of it happens, to be honest,\u201d Slater said. \u201cIf Draymond Green doesn\u2019t say that, I don\u2019t think it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Green\u2019s public comments questioning late-game strategy brought league-wide attention to a moment specifically involving Christie. But after review, the NBA determined the situation was not a deliberate attempt to tank.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe investigation was pretty simple,\u201d Slater explained. \u201cIt clearly wasn\u2019t intentional tanking. It was just a coaching mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

That distinction matters, especially as the league continues to grapple with a growing tanking problem. While teams like the Jazz and Pacers were fined earlier this season, enforcement has been inconsistent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey implement rules, punish early, and think it\u2019ll stop behavior\u2026 then they don\u2019t follow through,\u201d Slater said. \u201cIt feels like they shifted focus to long-term solutions instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Christie, Slater downplayed the significance of the mistake, noting that similar or worse coaching errors happen across the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was loud and probably embarrassing, but there are way more detrimental coaching mistakes,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think that one moment should impact his future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, the bigger issue may be how tanking is shaping the NBA\u2019s developmental environment. Slater pointed to examples of young players losing valuable experience in favor of intentional losses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re just trying to lose, you\u2019re taking reps away from young players,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re basically telling them winning doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

That reality puts teams like Sacramento in a difficult position. While some organizations fully embrace tanking for draft position, the Kings have attempted to remain somewhat competitive, winning seven of their past nine games and dropping from first to fourth in the NBA Draft Lottery standings.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s also grumbling like, \u2018What are the Kings doing?\u2019\u201d Slater said. \u201cIf they leaned in harder, maybe they\u2019d have better lottery odds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the Sacramento Kings avoided punishment, but the situation highlights a broader tension across the NBA \u2014 one in which competitive integrity, player development, and draft positioning continue to collide.<\/p>\n
