The World Cup isn\u2019t coming to San Diego this summer, but World Cup teams are.<\/p>\n
Switzerland and New Zealand have selected the city for their pre-tournament training bases, and a pair of tune-ups involving three other World Cup participants are scheduled for Snapdragon Stadium the week before they start playing for real.<\/p>\n
Switzerland will face Australia on June 6.<\/p>\n
A day later, Colombia will face Jordan.<\/p>\n
Tickets are expected to go on sale to the general public next week, although premium seat holders at Snapdragon have been given the option of purchasing tickets early.<\/p>\n
The team of most interest to U.S. fans is Australia, the Yanks\u2019 second opponent in Group D on June 19 in Seattle. Switzerland is a potential opponent for Mexico out of Group B in the round of 32, the start of the knockout phase.<\/p>\n
The Swiss will arrive June 2 and train at the San Diego Jewish Academy while staying just down the street at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort. Australia, which opens the tournament June 13 in Santa Clara against Turkiye, picked a training base in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n
Colombia and Jordan are meeting halfway between their training camps, Colombia in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Jordan at the University of Portland. Colombia plays its first two matches in Mexico; Jordan plays its first two in Santa Clara.<\/p>\n
Of the four teams coming to Snapdragon, Colombia is ranked the highest in the FIFA world rankings at No. 13. Switzerland is 19th, Australia is 27th and Jordan is 63rd.<\/p>\n
Switzerland-Australia has not been formally announced. Jordan\u2019s soccer federation confirmed the Colombia game a few months ago.<\/p>\n
New Zealand, the lowest-ranked of the 48-team field at 85th, is training at USD\u2019s Torero Stadium but is traveling to Tampa, Fla., to face England on June 6.
