The riots stemmed from the acquittal of four white Los Angeles Police Department officers in the beating of black motorist <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/la_riot\/article\/0,28804,1614117_1614084_1614831,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rodney King<\/a> in 1991.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_CFF05F7F-594F-F672-5736-65A17BD5CB55@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The<a href=\"http:\/\/timelines.latimes.com\/los-angeles-riots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> riots over five days in the spring of 1992<\/a> left more than 50 people dead, and more than 2,000 injured.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9A921D7A-9AF5-CAA3-F084-32943990E44E@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rioting destroyed or damaged over 1,000 buildings in the Los Angeles area. The estimated cost of the damages was over $1 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_754266EB-4571-FFD1-A378-3295FA809B8B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 9,800 California National Guard troops were dispatched to restore order.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_47396EA0-C918-734C-2924-24DC48DAC508@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nearly 12,000 people were arrested, though not all the arrests were directly related to the rioting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_24213CF1-0373-1097-9F83-65A1B10F4772@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 3, 1991 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/06\/17\/us\/rodney-king-timeline\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rodney King is beaten by LAPD officers<\/a> after King leads police on a high-speed chase through Los Angeles County. George Holliday videotapes the beating from his apartment balcony. The video shows King being struck by police batons more than 50 times. Over 20 officers were present at the scene, most from the LAPD. King suffered 11 fractures and other injuries due to the beating.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5204BC24-4398-7DC9-F6D8-96E4000E8945@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 4, 1991 &#8211; Holliday delivers the tape to local television station KTLA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_27ABB1EC-81FE-0ADD-A69D-96E40B453B37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 7, 1991 &#8211; King is released without being charged.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C94068E3-70D0-F59B-00D0-96E4279BCCC7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 15, 1991 &#8211; Sergeant Stacey Koon and officers Laurence Michael Powell, Timothy Wind, and Theodore Briseno are indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury in connection with the beating.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_86323874-FC83-3423-0177-96E432162058@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            May 10, 1991 &#8211; A grand jury refuses to indict 17 officers who stood by at the King beating and did nothing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F828024A-7E85-D5DB-24BE-96E43BE607EF@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            November 26, 1991 &#8211; Superior Court Judge Stanley Weisberg orders the trial of the four officers charged in the King beating moved to Simi Valley.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E18C46BE-2146-E594-C817-96E44558DDCF@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 29, 1992 &#8211; The four white LAPD officers are acquitted of beating King. Riots start at the intersection of Florence and Normandie in South Central Los Angeles. <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/la_riot\/article\/0,28804,1614117_1614084_1614511,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reginald Denny<\/a>, a white truck driver, is pulled from his truck and beaten. A news helicopter captures the beating on videotape. Mayor Tom Bradley declares a state of emergency, and Governor Pete Wilson calls in National Guard troops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9E3C6A34-C18E-966D-AF9A-96E450FBD18A@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 30-May 4, 1992 &#8211; Dusk to dawn curfews are enforced in the city and county of Los Angeles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_02D81662-9D5C-82DD-F1B5-96E47B26A8CB@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            May 1, 1992 &#8211; King makes an emotional plea for calm, stating, \u201cPeople, I just want to say, can we all get along? Can we get along? Can we stop making it horrible for the older people and the kids?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E1F36604-CC04-3C11-AE33-329670A98B44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            May 3, 1992 &#8211; Over 1,100 Marines, 600 Army soldiers, and 6,500 National Guard troops patrol the streets of Los Angeles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_67775E97-CE5C-EA30-8497-96E498D477B6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            August 4, 1992 &#8211; A federal grand jury returns indictments against Koon, Powell, Wind and Briseno on the charge of violating the civil rights of King.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_FE02743D-D78F-625D-861D-81FFF055C121@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            October 21, 1992 &#8211; A commission headed by former FBI and CIA Director William Webster concludes that the LAPD and City Hall leaders did not plan appropriately for the possibility of riots prior to the verdicts in the King case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_40C668D5-3CB9-8766-3DC1-96E4A2B3D755@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            February 25, 1993 &#8211; The trial begins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_09D06734-06BA-1E47-4AE6-96E4AA80409B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 17, 1993 &#8211; The federal jury convicts Koon and Powell of violating King\u2019s civil rights. Wind and Briseno are found not guilty. No disturbances follow the verdict.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_19E37299-BA72-F130-705A-96E4B3E23A80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            August 4, 1993 &#8211; US District Court Judge John Davies sentences both Sergeant Koon and Officer Powell to 30 months in prison for violating King\u2019s civil rights. Powell is found guilty of violating King\u2019s constitutional right to be free from an arrest made with \u201cunreasonable force.\u201d Ranking officer Koon is convicted of permitting the civil rights violation to occur.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5B76F2EC-DB87-8DCF-2D2F-96E4FC95147F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 19, 1994 &#8211; The US District Court in Los Angeles awards King $3.8 million in compensatory damages in a civil lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles. King had demanded $56 million, or $1 million for every blow struck by the officers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_02D1933F-DB5B-3E0C-1C39-96E523C49550@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            June 1, 1994 &#8211; King is awarded $0 in punitive damages in a civil trial against the police officers. He had asked for $15 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_873406F6-F7A4-52CC-D01D-96E53BA78CD2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 2012 &#8211; King\u2019s autobiography, \u201cThe Riot Within: My Journey from Rebellion to Redemption. Learning How We Can All Get Along,\u201d written with Lawrence J.
