LOS ANGELES, CA \u2014 California has earned a reputation for being second-to-none for qualities such as recreational amenities and tourist attractions, but the Golden State does come in as number two for having the second worst highways in the United States, according to a new study.<\/p>\n

Reason Foundation’s 29th Annual Highway Report<\/a> ranks California as having the 49th worst highways among all 50 states. The study factored 13 categories, including cost-effectiveness, spending, pavement conditions, fatalities, and traffic congestion. <\/p>\n

Pavement conditions and spending ultimately hurt California’s standings on the survey. <\/p>\n

Some of the low points noted in the report include:<\/p>\n

One of the worst five states with the least cost-effective highway systems. Accounts for a significant share of all rural interstates in poor-condition. Reported 32.35 percent of its urban arterial mileage in poor condition. Among the worst five states for overall highway performance. CA drivers were among those in five states who lost over 40 hours to traffic congestion. <\/p>\n

Alaska, which has geographic and weather-related challenges, ranked the worst highways in the country. Virginia ranked the highest.<\/p>\n

“Similar to last year, the top-performing states are a mix of large and small states, as well as states that are more urban and more rural,” the authors said.<\/p>\n

The overall rankings of this year’s report were similar to last year, though Massachusetts improved, and Arizona and Idaho declined in ranks.<\/p>\n
