\u201cHow you feeling, Sabrinawood?\u201d Sabrina Carpenter asked as she gazed out at the tens of thousands of fans she\u2019d gathered into a makeshift city Friday night. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m headlining Coachella.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I can a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, when Carpenter made her Coachella debut in 2024, the Disney kid turned pop icon vowed that the next time she played the desert festival, her name would be atop the bill.<\/p>\n

She returned as promised this weekend as one of music\u2019s biggest acts, with two No. 1 singles and a pair of Grammy-nominated albums under her belt and a story to tell about her rise to stardom.<\/p>\n

Heading into Coachella, I\u2019d wondered whether Carpenter, 26, would simply play the same show she\u2019d already brought several times<\/a> to L.A. (as recently as November) on tour behind 2025\u2019s \u201cShort n\u2019 Sweet\u201d and last year\u2019s \u201cMan\u2019s Best Friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

To her credit, though, she created a whole new production, which began with a video in which Carpenter is pulled over by a police offer played by the actor Sam Elliott as she drives toward a new life in Hollywood. In the video, Elliott lets her go, after which she turned up in the flesh at Coachella to strut down a Walk of Fame situation and end up onstage in a detailed simulacrum of the Hollywood Hills.<\/p>\n

The first half of the show featured a bunch of songs from the singer\u2019s last two LPs \u2014 she sang \u201cPlease Please Please\u201d in a mock-up of a recording-studio vocal booth, while \u201cWhen Did You Get Hot?\u201d sounded like En Vogue\u2019s \u201cMy Lovin\u2019 (You\u2019re Never Gonna Get It)\u201d \u2014 as well as an oldie in \u201cBecause I Liked a Boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came a very long appearance by Susan Sarandon, who delivered a monologue about \u2026 the trauma of childhood celebrity? Honestly, it was hard to tell \u2014 a bit of a miscalculation on Carpenter\u2019s part, as though she\u2019d assumed that everyone at Coachella wanted to hear her deepest (if vaguest) thoughts about the pain of growing up in the Mouse House.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe better come out in an amazing outfit,\u201d one woman next to me said of Carpenter as Sarandon continued to extend the singer\u2019s costume change.<\/p>\n

Once Carpenter was back \u2014 wearing leggings and a blue sweater \u2014 she did \u201cGo Go Juice\u201d and \u201cSugar Talking\u201d in a sort of dance-studio setting then interpolated a bit of Barry Manilow\u2019s \u201cCopacabana (At the Copa)\u201d into \u201cFeather\u201d before Will Ferrell appeared as an irritated stage tech moaning and groaning about the demands of Carpenter\u2019s show. (Again: kind of a fail.)<\/p>\n
