Brenda Way Theatre, 3153 17th St., S.F. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odc.dance\/fauxnique\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.odc.dance\/fauxnique<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The expanse of magenta polyester flowed behind her as she lifted it aloft like childhood parachute time, letting it fill with air and dome upward. Or her body would stretch it from within, limbs pressing into the textile in the modern dance style of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/dance\/article\/martha-graham-100-review-21352711.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martha Graham<\/a>. In another moment, her arms flap the fabric like a butterfly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I\u2019m making shapes for you right now,\u201d said Jenkinson, 55, who also performs in drag as Fauxnique. \u201cBut part of the under-the-fabric section is me having my own private moment of abstraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFauxnique: How Do I Look?,\u201d at ODC on Friday-Sunday, April 17-19, is the performer\u2019s \u201csister\u201d to her 2025 cabaret show \u201cFauxnique.\u00a0So Relevant,\u201d which had two sold-out runs at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/oasis-sf-drag-21251150.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oasis<\/a>. She twirled it around her body like a toreador, first forming a skirt and finally drooping into \u201cDying Swan\u201d-like wings at her side. The costume was made for another performance by San Francisco drag couturier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/movies-tv\/article\/superstar-karen-carpenter-story-18206991.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. David Glamamore<\/a>, a longtime collaborator of Jenkinson whom she credits with helping form Fauxnique\u2019s visual identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\u201cFauxnique: How Do I Look?\u201d by Monique\u00a0Jenkinson is the sister work to the performer\u2019s 2025 cabaret show \u201cFauxnique.\u00a0So Relevant.\u201d\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:2 \/ 3\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFauxnique: How Do I Look?\u201d by Monique\u00a0Jenkinson is the sister work to the performer\u2019s 2025 cabaret show \u201cFauxnique.\u00a0So Relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of Robbie Sweeny<\/p>\n<p>In line with the theme of aging, \u201cHow Do I Look?\u201d is also the San Francisco artist\u2019s first movement-heavy solo work since her double hip replacement in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA teacher I had told me, \u2018Learning is chaos,\u2019 and I think aging is chaos,\u201d said Jenkinson. \u201cThere have been things about aging I\u2019ve haven\u2019t been prepared for, like being called \u2018an aged-out old art f\u2014,\u2019 which is something at the root of both pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenkinson has been creating performances at the intersection of dance, drag and experimental theater for three decades. Although she still considers ballet \u201cthe country I defected from,\u201d Jenkinson is a modern dancer who graduated from the prestigious program at Bennington College in Vermont. In that field, she\u2019s worked with choreographers including Kathleen Hermesdorf and Sara Shelton Mann.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of her work, Fauxnique was also the first cisgender woman to win a major drag pageant, crowned Miss Trannyshack in 2003. Jenkinson writes about her dual art forms, which eventually merged into one artistic practice in her 2022 memoir: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/books\/article\/monique-jenkinson-is-a-san-francisco-drag-21178236.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFaux Queen: A Life in Drag.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Her 50s, she admitted, have been \u201cthe very Gen X desire to get the f\u2014 over myself, as I said in my Guggenheim grant application.\u201d \u201cSo Relevant\u201d and \u201cHow Do I Look?\u201d tackle that theme with Fauxnique\u2019s signature absurdity and humor. In both projects, Jenkinson employed the drag trope of impersonation, exaggerating the signature vocal traits and physicality of a celebrity. Not only do the fabric pieces onstage reference previous performances, but there\u2019s also a section of the dance that turns a conversation Jenkinson had with her dramaturg, Jesse Hewit, about separating Monique the aging dancer and Monique the person, into a recorded soundtrack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this lore in culture when we imagine our 80-year-old self on a rocker in Sonoma County that we no longer care what people think about us,\u201d said Hewit. \u201cIn a way, we\u2019re all waiting for that to happen. But it\u2019s really tricky for performing artists.
