The foundation learned last year that the golf facility’s aging irrigation system was shot and that repair would require significant investment, McConnell Foundation Chief Operating Officer Shannon Phillips said.<\/p>\n
The foundation began considering a possible redesign of the city’s oldest public golf course, including changes to the driving range and clubhouse and even the possibility of adding a miniature golf course to attract more families.<\/p>\n

Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!<\/a><\/p>\n Phillips said in an interview this week that she and others from McConnell have spent the past months researching offerings at golf courses in Oregon, Sacramento and Chico, facilities she said “are doing cool things that are more creative.”<\/p>\n A revamp at Lake Redding is being considered because although people still love to golf, they don’t want to spend as much money or time on the sport and are looking for courses that are shorter and more affordable, she said.<\/p>\n So in considering what might be ahead long-term, Phillips said, the nonprofit wants to “think about what’s the best community benefit.”<\/p>\n While continuing to search for more permanent options, McConnell announced that they’d partnered with Tierra Oaks to construct and operate a new driving range facility.<\/p>\n Construction on the driving range at Lake Redding will start later in April, Phillips said. By November, nets, lights and a shelter are expected to be added at the new driving range.<\/p>\n Munson declined to say how much the upgrades would cost. “There’s going to be, I would say, some frugal upgrades initially with some better upgrades later in the year,” he said. Phillips said that the foundation is covering the cost of the driving pads and other improvements for the site to reopen. She did not say how much would be spent on the upgrades.<\/p>\n Players at the various 9 -and-18-hole golf courses in the region have indicated they want more driving range space, making McConnell decide to pursue that option “sooner rather than later while we think about what is the long-term strategy for Lake Redding,” Phillips said.<\/p>\n When the Lake Redding’s public driving range opens in May, up to 35 players per hour would be able to use the space, said Munson. Depending on what additional features are added, that number of players could significantly expand.
